Women's Lacrosse Winning Streak Snapped by York (PA), 13-9

Montclair, NJ (4/5/11) – Sophomore midfielder Leah Schultz (Catonsville, MD / Seton Keough) scored four goals while sophomore attack Kim Wayson (Harwood, MD / Southern) added three goals as York College won its fourth straight as the Spartans snapped Montclair State’s six-game winning streak with a 13-9 victory at Sprague Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Freshman Kerri Nicolich (Islip, NY / Islip) added a pair of goals as the Spartans used a pair of four-goal runs in each half to improve to 11-2 on the season. York was listed among the teams receiving votes in the latest IWLCA national poll.

Junior midfielder Cora Delfini (New Egypt, NJ / New Egypt) had five goals for Montclair State, which suffered its first loss in a month. MSU, now 6-3, last fell to 10th-ranked Stevens on March 5.

Montclair State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 7:43 of the contest as Delfini collected the natural hat trick on two unassisted tallies and a free-position goal. Following a timeout, York responded with four straight goals, the last three by Schultz for a 4-3 advantage with 13:25 left in the opening period. 

MSU’s Kayla Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) tied the game at 4-4 scoring on a free position shot but Nicolich found the back of the net twice inside the final seven minutes of the half as the Spartans led 6-4 at the break. 

Schultz would net her fourth goal of the game with 22:58 remaining to give York an 8-5 lead before Montclair trimmed that deficit back to a goal as Henderson and Delfini answered to make the score 8-7 with 17:57 to play. York though put game away with its second four-goal run. Toni DiLeonardi (Sykesville, MD / Liberty) began the barrage and Erica Mulford (Crownsville, MD / Seton Keough) answered less than a minute later with a man-up goal before Kula gave York a 11-7 with 15:22 left. Wayson capped the run with her third goal as the Spartans built a 12-8 lead with 10:59 remaining.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tina Nicklas (Baltimore, MD / Catonville) made eight saves for York, which outshot Montclair State 31-24 in the game. Kuld finished with two assists and Schultz posted six draws. Katie Vautier (Harwood, PA / Archbishop Spalding) forced three turnovers and added a team-best four ground balls.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tiffani Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) stopped 11 shots for Montclair State. Kailee Beal(Landing, NJ / Roxbury) had a goal and five draws for the Red Hawks while Delfini (four draws) and Stephanie Cantillo (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) had five ground balls apiece.

Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, April 7 as they face Bard College in a Skyline contest at 6:00 pm. York returns home to Pennsylvania for a Saturday, April 9 contest against Capital Athletic Conference foe St. Mary’s (MD) at 3:00 pm.
