Baseball Gets Split of Home-and-Home with Rutgers-Newark

Little Falls, NJ (4/15/11) – Junior first baseman Jason Chesterman (Bloomfield, NJ / Bloomfield) drove in three runs while classmate and catcher Kevin Bond (Cedar Grove, NJ / Cedar Grove) added two RBI as Montclair State gained a split of its home-and-home series with Rutgers-Newark with an 8-1 victory at Yogi Berra Stadium on Friday afternoon.

Freshman lefthander Jonathan Torregroza (Bound Brook, NJ / Immaculata) held the Scarlet Raiders in check allowing a run and five hits over eight innings as the Red Hawks snapped a three-game losing streak improving to 12-9 overall, 4-4 in the NJAC.

Junior designated hitter Mike Ciaramello (Bloomfield, NJ / Bloomfield) drove in the lone run for the Scarlet Raiders (13-10, 5-2 NJAC), who won the first game of the set on Thursday, 5-4 at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. 

In the loss on Thursday, Montclair State stranded 11 runners and went 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position in the one-run loss. MSU equaled that in the first inning as it scored three times against Raiders’ starter Billy Cerruti (Oceanport, NJ / Shore Regional) in the first inning.

 and Bond worked out walks around a base hit by Michael Boggi(Towaco, NJ / Montville). Chesterman lined a single to left to score the first run and Cody Pace (Milltown, NJ / Spotswood) lofted a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead. Freshman Anthony Bowens (Nutley, NJ / Nutley) added a big two-out RBI single as Montclair grabbed a three-run lead.

Rutgers-Newark would scratch back for a run in the second as Ciaramello blooped a single along the right field line with two outs scoring Chris Ballester (Freehold, NJ / Freehold Township) as Rutgers-Newark trimmed the lead to 3-1.

The Red Hawks quickly added to the lead with three more runs in the second – all with two out. Bond ripped a two-run double over the left fielder and Chesterman singled into center scoring Bond as MSU went up 6-1. 

Chesterman delivered a run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly and Montclair’s final run came in the eighth as James Thornton (Rahway, NJ / Union Catholic) collected an RBI single.

The runs were more than enough for Torregroza, who earned his first victory of the season (1-2). The lefty struck out seven and walked two in his 109-pitch outing. Freshman Alex Lesch (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) pitched a scoreless ninth. 

Cerruti took the loss falling to 3-5 as she allowed the six early runs and seven hits in two innings. He walked four. Cerruti had allowed just one earned run in his previous 28 innings prior to today.

Chesterman, Bond and Mickey McGraw (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) had two hits apiece to pace the 11-hit Montclair State attack. Patrick Reitmeyer (Kearny, NJ / St. Mary’s (Rutherford)) had two of the Raiders’ five hits.

The Red Hawks were scheduled to play Rowan University in an NJAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 16. That has been postponed and will take place on Sunday, April 17 beginning at 2:00 pm. Rutgers-Newark is slated to play at Rutgers-Camden on Saturday, April 16 at 11:30 am.
