Softball Shuts Down Rutgers-Newark in NJAC Sweep

Little Falls, NJ (4/15/11) – Freshman righthander Alex Hill (Parsippany, NJ / Parsippany Hills) and sophomore righty Jamie Miller (Spotswood, NJ / St. John Vianney) each tossed a pair of two-hit shutouts as Montclair State extended its winning streak to 16 games with a pair identical 8-0 victories over Rutgers-Newark in an NJAC doubleheader at the MSU Softball Stadium.

Freshman third baseman Dana Amato (Hillsdale, NJ / Pascack Valley) blasted a home run for the third straight game and finished with five RBI as the Red Hawks improved to 20-4 on the year, 8-0 in the NJAC. 

Rutgers-Newark dropped to 7-17 overall, 2-6 in the league.

Hill (11-2) collected her fifth shutout of the season allowing a pair of singles while facing three batters over the minimum in the five-inning contest. She struck out eight and walked one, snapping a string of 30 2/3 innings without a walk.  Hill has walked just eight batters in 83.0 innings this season.

Scoreless in the third, Montclair placed two runs as Katie Muglia (South Plainfield, NJ / South Plainfield) doubled home Leslie Gonzalez (North Bergen, NJ / North Bergen) with the game’s first run. Amato lofted a sacrifice fly as MSU led 2-0.

The Red Hawks added to the lead with a six-run fourth inning. Hill helped her own cause with a solo home run to lead off the inning. Three batters later, Amato connected for her seventh round-tripper of the season, a three-run blast making the score 6-0. It was the third straight game Amato has hit a home run. Liz Russo (Jackson, NJ / Liberty)scored on an error before Hill capped off the inning with her second RBI on an single to right center.

Gonzalez, Muglia, Russo, Hill and Kelli O’Brien (Edison, NJ / Edison) each had two hits for Montclair. 

Miller nearly duplicated Hill’s performance from the first game. Facing just three batters over the minimum too, Miller recorded her third shutout striking out two and walking one while giving up two singles.

Montclair scored in each of its first four at bats while pounding out 16 as each player in the lineup hat at least one hit. Russo led the way going 3-for-4 while driving in two runs. 

The Red Hawks scored five times in the top of the first. Amato had an RBI on a fielder’s choice and Russo singled through the left side for another. Shannon Mozek (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in another as Montclair led 3-0. Priscilla Camacho (Jersey City, NJ / County Prep) added an RBI single before Stephanie Szeliga (South Plainfield, NJ / South Plainfield) capped the inning with a run-scoring hit.

Russo added her second RBI in as many innings as she singled in the second and Gonzalez made it 7-0 in the third on a groundout and finished off Montclair’s offensive output with an RBI single in the fourth. 

Montclair State returns to action on Sunday, April 17 as they travel to Rowan University for a 1:00 pm NJAC doubleheader.
