Riverdale, NY (4/16/11) – Senior midfielder Kayla Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) scored five goals while sophomore attack Kailee Beal (Landing, NJ / Roxbury)
added four goals and two assists as Montclair won its third straight
knocking off Mount St. Vincent, 20-9 in Skyline Conference action on
Saturday.
Senior Meghan Spitzer (Mount Olive, NJ / Mount Olive)
added three goals and an assist as the Red Hawks moved to 9-3 overall,
7-0 in the Skyline Conference. The Red Hawks will face Farmingdale
State on Tuesday, April 19 in Farmingdale, NY at 4:00 pm. A win would
give Montclair the league’s regular-season championship and top-seed
and a first-round bye in the conference tournament which begins on
Tuesday, April 26.
A loss would put MSU and Farmingdale into a tie with the Rams holding
the tiebreaker. If MSU loses and Ramapo defeats Kean , then the Red
Hawks, Rams and Roadrunners would all be tied at 7-1 and the seedings
would be determined by tiebreaker.
After trading the first six goals of the game, Montclair would take
control with three goals near the midpoint of the first half. Kayla
Henderson scored on a free-position attempt with 20:23 to go and sister Krissa Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) tallied two minutes later before Beal’s second with 15:37 to play made the score 6-3. Stephanie Cantillo (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) assisted on the two goals.
The Dolphins’ Jessie Mitchell answered back with an unassisted goal,
however Montclair would score nine of the final 10 goals in the half to
take a 15-5 lead at the break. Beal (two goals) and Henderson (three
goals) combined on five straight as the Red Hawks went up 11-4 with 2:56
left.
Mt. St. Vincent would score 32 seconds later to cut the deficit to six
however MSU scored four times in the final 1:54, including three by Cora Delfini (New Egypt, NJ / New Egypt) for the 10-goal margin.
Krissa Henderson had a goal two assists and four draw controls for Montclair, which outshot the Dolphins 38-24. Tiffani Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) stopped seven shots while Beal posted eight draws and three ground balls to complete her afternoon.
Following the game against Farmingdale State, Montclair will remain on
the road traveling to top-ranked The College of New Jersey on Friday,
April 22 for a 7:00 pm contest in Ewing.
