Baseball Splits Pair of One-Run Games with Rowan in NJAC Doubleheader

Little Falls, NJ (4/17/11) – Montclair State junior first baseman Jason Chesterman (Bloomfield, NJ / Bloomfield)drove in the game-winning run in the opener while Rowan junior shortstop Marc Magliaro (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe) delivered the game-winner in the nightcap as the Red Hawks and Profs split an New Jersey Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at Yogi Berra Stadium on Sunday.

MSU (13-10, 5-5 NJAC) won the opener 4-3 with the Profs (20-7-1, 8-2 NJAC) taking the second game by a one-run margin, 3-2. Kevin Bond (Cedar Grove, NJ / Cedar Grove) was 4-for-8 with a double and triple for Montclair while Matt Citro (Bloomsbury, NJ / Phillipsburg) went a combined 4-for-7 with four runs scored and four stolen bases.

The Profs took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the first game as Citro manufactured his own run. Citro walked with one out, stole second and scored on a pair of wild pitches. He would also be involved in the second run as he singled with one out in the fifth and moved to third on Marc Magliaro’s (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe) double. Brad Woodend (Medford, NJ / Shawnee) dropped a single into right scoring Citro as Rowan led 2-0.

Meanwhile lefthander Curtis Arsi (Washington Township, NJ / Westwood) kept Montclair in check through the first four innings with the help of three double plays. 

However the Red Hawks would get to him in the fifth as Cody Pace (Milltown, NJ / Spotswood) and Anthony Bowens(Nutley, NJ / Nutley) singled back-to-back to open the inning. A sacrifice moved the runners up and both scored asMickey McGraw (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) singled through the right side tying the game at 2-2.  Jay Bionde(Pompton Plains, NJ / Pequannock) followed with an RBI single as Montclair State took the lead. 

The Red Hawks looked to extend the lead in the seventh, but a solid throw from rightfielder Kevin O’Brien (Pennsville, NJ / Pennsville) to Nick Turano (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) at home plate nailed a runner for the final out keeping the game at a run. 

Rowan used the momentum of the great defensive play to tie the game in the top of the eighth.  Scott Weaver (Ledgewood, NJ / Roxbury) singled, stole second and scored as Turano singled to right-centerfield as the game was knotted at 3-3. 

MSU answered that with a run in the bottom half. Bond led off with a triple to center and after a fly out, Chesterman lined a double to right-center scoring Bond with the go-ahead run.

In the ninth, the Profs would threaten as Brandon Winkler (Glendora, NJ / Paul VI) walked with one out. Winkler would steal second, but over slid the bag and was tagged out for the second out. Freshman lefty John Silvestri (Livingston, NJ / Seton Hall Prep) was called in from the bullpen and got Citro to ground out to second as MSU took the first game 4-3. 

Sophomore righthander Zach Brown (New Vernon, NJ / Morristown) got the victory going the first 8 2/3 innings before giving way to Silvestri, who earned his first career save. Brown allowed three runs and eight hits, struck out four and walked three as he improved to 4-1. Arsi took the loss falling to 5-2. 

McGraw, Bionde and Bond had two hits each for Montclair State while Citro, Turano and Weaver had two apiece for Rowan. 

In the second game, Rowan again took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Magliaro led off with a single and later scored as Turano doubled to left field. 

Montclair State would come back to take the lead in the second. Pace led off with a single and Chesterman walked.Michael Boggi (Towaco, NJ / Montville) singled through the left side scoring Pace tying the game at 1-1. After a pair of strikeouts, Andrew Himmelfarb (Upper Nyack, NY / Nyack) singled through the left side of the infield plating Chesterman as the Red Hawks took a 2-1 lead.

Rowan knotted the game in the sixth thanks in part to Citro, who led off with a single and stole second. After moving to third on a ground out he scored on Winklker’s sacrifice fly for a 2-2 game. 

Citro then came through again in the eighth drawing a two-out walk. He would steal second – his fourth of the doubleheader – and scored as Magliaro bounced a single through the right side giving the Profs the 3-2 lead. 

Montclair State threatened in the bottom of the eighth as Bond belted a one-out double. Reliever Kyle Brown (Southampton, NJ / Seneca) got a ground out for the second out. Ryan Peterson (Belle Mead, NJ / Montgomery) came on and got a fly ball to end the inning. 

John O’Hara (Clayton, NJ / Gloucester Catholic) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his fifth save. 

Sophomore righty Steven Melchiorre (Atco, NJ / Hammonton) got the victory going 7 1.3 innings allowing two runs and seven hits. Melchiorre (4-0) struck out seven and walked two. Freshman lefty Dylan Papa (South Plainfield, NJ / South Plainfield) took the loss to fall to 0-2. Papa went eight innings allowing three runs and seven hits, struck out one and walked one.

Bond and Pace were 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively for MSU while Citro, Turano and Magliaro had two hits apiece to account for six of the Profs’ seven in the contest.

Montclair State returns to action on Monday, April 18 as the Red Hawks host Oneonta State at Yogi Berra Stadium beginning at 3:30 pm. Rowan is at Elizabethtown  College on Tuesday, April 19 at 4:00 pm.
