Bond, Torregroza Collect Weekly NJAC Baseball Honors

Little Falls, NJ (4/18/11) – Junior catcher Kevin Bond (Cedar Grove, NJ / Cedar Grove) and freshman lefty Jonathan Torregroza (Bound Brook, NJ / Immaculata) were selected for weekly honors from the New Jersey Athleti Conference on Monday as they were named the Player and Rookie Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Bond earns NJAC Player of the Week honors after hitting .562 (9-for-16) with five doubles, one triple, three RBI, and five runs scored in four conference games played for the Red Hawks. He recorded at least two hits in all four contests, and opened the week by going a combined 5-for-8 with four doubles, thee RBI, and four runs scored in the Red Hawks’ 5-4 road loss and 8-1 home win over Rutgers-Newark on back-to-back days. He wrapped up the week by going a combined 4-for-8 with a double, a triple, and a run scored in MSU’s NJAC doubleheader split with Rowan. Bond currently ranks sixth in the NJAC in slugging percentage (.551).

Torregroza becomes the second different Red Hawk to earn NJAC Rookie Pitcher of the Week honors after securing the first victory of his collegiate career in MSU’s 8-1 NJAC win over Rutgers-Newark. He surrendered just five hits and one run while striking out seven in eight innings of work. Torregroza, who did not allow an extra base hit in the victory, currently ranks 35th in the NJAC in opposing batting average (.260).
