Rough Second Inning Too Much for Baseball to Overcome Against York (PA)

Box Score

York, PA (4/26/11) – A five-run second inning by York College proved to be too much to overcome for Montclair State as the Red Hawks dropped a 9-6 contest to the Spartans at Jacquet Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior Michael Boggi (Towaco, NJ / Montville) and junior Mickey McGraw (Morristown, NJ  / Morristown) each belted home runs for MSU, which had its two-game winning streak snapped with the loss. Montclair fell to 15-12 on the season.

York plated the five runs in the inning all with two out. After a leadoff single, Montclair would get the next two outs, but a walk followed by an error kept the inning going as the first run scored on the miscue. A two-run single came next before a two-run home run as the Spartans grabbed the 5-0 lead.

York extended the lead to 7-0 in the third with another two-run home run before MSU battled back. Boggi got the Red Hawks on the board with a solo shot in the fourth and McGraw’s three-run balst in the fifth made the score 7-4. Matt Moreno (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge) delivered an RBI single in the sixth to slice the lead to 7-5 but the Spartans tacked on two runs in the bottom of the inning to push its lead back to 9-5.

McGraw scored on a double play to bring Montclair State within three but that would be as close as the Red Hawks would get.

McGraw and Boggi each had three hits for MSU, which got two hits from Jay Bionde (Pompton Plains, NJ / Pequannock).

Junior lefthander Sean Hille (Edison, NJ / St. Joseph’s (Metuchen)) took the loss falling to 3-3.

The Red Hawks will head back into action tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Jersey City to face New Jersey City University at 3:30 pm in an NJAC matchup. The game was originally scheduled for Thursday, but moved up a day due to an impending rainstorm forecasted for the entire area.
