Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past Kean in Skyline Tournament, 17-3

Montclair, NJ (4/28/11) – Senior midfielder Kayla Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) scored five times while juniorCora Delfini (New Egypt, NJ / New Egypt) added four goals as top-seeded Montclair State rolled into the Skyline Conference Tournament Championship Game with a 17-3 victory over No. 4 seed Kean University at Sprague Field.

Freshman Kelly Schoneveld (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) added three goals and sophomore Kailee Beal (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) two as the Red Hawks won for the fifth time in its last six games improving to 11-4 on the season.

Montclair State will face either No. 2 seed Ramapo College or No. 3 seed Farmingdale State in the title game on Saturday, April 30 at Sprague Field beginning at 1:00 pm. The Ramapo/Farmingdale semifinal was postponed on Thursday and will be played on Friday, April 29 in Mahwah at 4:00 pm. Also at stake on Saturday will be the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship. Montclair State is seeking its second straight and fifth Skyline crown since joining the league in 2006.

Senior Joelle Vitale (Metuchen, NJ / Metuchen), Amanda South (Fairless Hills, PA / Conwell-Egan Catholic) and Stephanie Tocko (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) each had a goal for the Cougars, who ended their season at 9-9. Kean reached the semifinals by knocking off Mount St. Vincent in the opening round 21-16 on Tuesday. 

Earlier in the season, Montclair State beat Kean, 20-16 in Union on March 29 in a back-and-forth affair, however Tuesday’s would be much different as MSU registered the first 11 goals of the game, including eight in the opening period. 

Alex Scerbak (Clifton, NJ / Clifton)
 put the Red Hawks on the board with an unassisted tally 4:37 into the game. It was Scerbak’s first goal of the season. Schoneveld netted her first just over seven minutes later and,  after Henderson’s first goal, added a second with 9:16 left as Montclair State led 4-0. Delfini scored 40 seconds later and Alyssa Scarnaty(Wood-Ridge, NJ / Fair Lawn) notched a goal exactly two minutes later with 6:36 on the clock as the lead grew to 6-0. 

Maggie Fallon (Cherry Hill, NJ / Camden Catholic)
 and Henderson each scored inside the final 35 seconds of the half as the Red Hawks took their 8-0 lead into halftime. 

Meanwhile, Montclair shutdown Kean’s potent 1-2 punch of Lyndsey Cannon (Delran, NJ / Delran) and South, who had combined for 135 goals entering the game.  

Cannon scored 10 goals in the earlier loss to MSU but could not find the back of the net on Tuesday as MSU held her to four shots in the game. South, who had 11 goals in the opening round win over Mt. St. Vincent, was held scoreless until the 23:05 mark of the second half as she scored on a free-position attempt, Kean’s first goal of the game. 

The Red Hawks defense, led by seniors Kristin Quigley (Marlton, NJ /Lenape) and Sara Watson (Medford Lakes, NJ / Shawnee) held Kean to just five shots in the opening period. Quigley led the way with five caused turnovers and five ground balls while Watson added three forced turnovers and three ground balls.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tiffani Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) made nine saves, including two-free-position stops. Senior Ashley Berghold (Boyertown, PA /Boyertown Area Senior) had four saves for the Cougars. 

Fallon and Scarnaty each had a goal and two assists for MSU while Meghan Spitzer (Mount Olive, NJ / Mount Olive)tallied two assists.
