Montclair, NJ (5/2/11) – Senior midfielder Kayla Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) and freshman Kelly Schoneveld (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) were named the Skyline Conference Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively on Monday.
Both players helped Montclair State to its fifth Skyline championship in six years as the Red Hawks knocked off Kean and Ramapo to capture its second straight crown as well as earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship.
Henderson was named the Skyline Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player as she scored 11 goals and added five draw controls and a ground ball in the two victories. She scored five goals and had a caused turnover in the Red Hawks' 17-4 semifinal win over Kean and then posted six goals along with five draws and a ground ball in the 17-7 championship game win versus Ramapo. Henderson increased her season goal total to 59, the second-highest season total in MSU history. Henderson leads the Skyline Conference in game-winning goals with six and is ranked fourth in goals per game (4.69) and fifth in points per contest (4.19).
Schoneveld contributed with six goals and two assists along with four ground balls and four draws. She had three goals in the 17-4 semifinal win over Kean along with two ground balls and two draws. Schoneveld then posted three goals, two assists, two ground balls and two draws in the championship contest with Ramapo.
