Women's Lacrosse Falls to Rowan in Regular-Season Finale, 12-9

Montclair, NJ (5/5/11) – Senior midfielder Alli Dickey (Stevensville, MD / Kent Island) scored four times, including twice during a decisive four-goal run to open the second half as Rowan University picked up a much-needed win with a 12-9 victory over Montclair State in the final NJAC and regular-season finale for both teams. 

Junior midfielder Michelle Lubrano (Delanco, NJ / Holy Cross) had two goals and two assists as the Profs improved to 10-6 overall and finished 4-1 in the NJAC. Rowan kept its hopes alive for a potential at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament, which gets underway next Wednesday, May 11. Selections will be announced on Sunday, May 8. 

Senior midfielder Kayla Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) had four goals for Montclair State, which had its three-game winning streak snapped and lost for just the third time in their last 16 contests. The Red Hawks (13-5, 3-2 NJAC) will continue their season in the NCAA Tournament as Montclair earned a spot in the field via the automatic bid for capturing the Skyline Conference championship last Saturday.

Tied at 5-5 entering the second half, Rowan scored the first four goals of the period to take the lead for good. Lubrano scored her 43rd of the season 1:50 into the period and Nicole Valianti (Oaklyn, NJ / Collingswood) collected her second of the game with 25:03 to play as the Profs led 7-5.  Dickey then scored twice in a 27-second span, the latter coming with 23:13 on the clock as Rowan took a 9-5 advantage. 

Montclair State would finally end the streak as Henderson scored just past the midway point of the half on an unassisted tally.Maggie Fallon (Cherry Hill, NJ / Camden Catholic) closed the gap further as she picked up a missed shot by Henderson and deposited into the back of the net with 11:41 to play as MSU pulled within 9-7. 

Lubrano however came up with a big goal 58 seconds later, registering her second of the game as Rowan also added another goal by Caitlin Ravel (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) with 6:17 left to restore its lead to 11-7. The teams traded the final three goals with Montclair’s Henderson scoring the last for the final margin. 

Ravel got the Profs off to a 1-0 start 3:44 into the game, but Montclair answered back as Kelly Schoneveld (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) scored less than minute later to tie the game. Goals by Dickey and Leah Hershey (Glen Rock, PA / Susquehannock) 89 seconds part put Rowan back on top before Montclair State scored three times to take its first lead of the game. 

Henderson had the first goal and Cora Delfini (New Egypt, NJ / New Egypt) set up Fallon for the second before scoring one herself as Montclair led 4-3 with 9:24 to go. Dickey tied the contest on a free-position attempt and Valianti put Rowan in front with 1:34 left however Henderson’s goal off an assist from Kailee Beal (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) with 40 seconds remaining sent the teams into halftime tied at 5-5.

Lubrano added three draws, three ground balls and three caused turnovers to complete her night. Dickey also had three draws and three ground balls while goalkeeper Lindsay Barrie (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) stopped four shots. 

Tiffani Henderson (Landing, NJ / Roxbury) made eight saves for Montclair State. Schoneveld led the Red Hawks with five draws, four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
