United Way and Montclair State University Participate in Day of Action

Students plan community food drive as part of the United Way's Day of Action, June 21, 2011.

June 10, 2011 - The United Way of Northern New Jersey and Montclair State University have joined forces to collect and distribute food and personal care items to needy area families. Beginning on June 11, when students will set up drop-off locations in the area, and running through June 21, students will collect items for distribution through the First Seventh-Day Adventist Church of Montclair. Summer is an ideal time to bring attention to reduced availability of food pantry supplies, when there is less attention paid to community needs.

Each year the United Way celebrates June 21 as a Day of Action, which focuses volunteers in a day of service that contributes to community needs. June 21 is the summer solstice, and the longest day of the year, making it ideal for a day filled with outreach and giving that positively impacts local families and friends in need. This is the first year that Montclair State has participated in the United Way's Day of Action. It is being organized by an Environment, Education & Community Outreach (EECO) AmeriCorps student, who coordinates the Montclair State Community Service and Volunteer Resource Center, located in the Center for Student Development in the Student Center.

Montclair State students will collect unexpired, non-perishable food and personal care items to be distributed through the First Seventh-Day Adventist Church of Montclair (address below). They will begin setting up drop-off points throughout Montclair, and will have a drop off on the Montclair State campus in the Center for Student Involvement, Student Center Annex 104.

The Service-Learning and Community Engagement program helped promote and organize this event, which brings together students and community partners in a joint effort to draw attention to a critical community need.
