Montclair, NJ (8/8/11) – In less than a month, the Montclair State fall teams will take to the field kicking off a new athletic season.Women’s Soccer and field hockey will have the honors of opening up the 2011-2012 athletic year as they begin their schedules on Thursday, September 1 with road contests against perennial NCAA Tournament contenders.
The field hockey squad will play the “first game” of the new year at 4:00 pm traveling to St. David’s, PA for matchup with the Eagles of Eastern University. It will mark the fifth time in the last decade that the two will square off in their respective season openers. Last season, 19th-ranked Eastern picked up a 4-1 victory over MSU. Montclair State will then return to Sprague Field for its home opener on Saturday, September 3 against Rensselaer at 1:00 pm.
Women’s soccer will travel a lesser road for its season opener as Montclair will go the 13 miles to Hoboken to face the Ducks of Stevens, an NCAA Tournament participant from a year ago. The teams have split 13 career meetings (6-6-1) however the Red Hawks will be looking to regain the upper hand in the series following a 2-1 loss at MSU Soccer Park last season. Like the field hockey team, the Red Hawks will also open up their home schedule on September 3 facing Mount St. Vincent (2:00 pm) on the new field turf surface at MSU Soccer Park.
Men’s Soccer, which has made five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, will get the distinction of first home contest of the year as the Red Hawks, under first-year head coach Todd Tumelty, take on New Paltz (4:00 pm) at MSU Soccer Park. The contest is the first of a three-game home stand to open the year as Montclair State will face an early-season test against New York University on Sunday, September 4.
Another first-year coach, Eddie Stawinski, and his volleyball squad will also be in action over the Labor Day weekend as the Red Hawks are sure to face some tough competition in the NYU Labor Day Invitational at the Coles Sports Center. Montclair will also head to New Paltz for a single match on September 7 and to Poughkeepsie for the Vassar Invitational on September 9-10 before making its first appearance at the Panzer Athletic Center on September 13 against Kean.
The Red Hawk football team will get the first weekend of the year off as they prepare for their season and home opener on September 10 at Sprague Field. Montclair, ranked 12th in the D3Football.com Preseason poll, faces Salve Regina for the first time at Noon in the first of six home contests on the schedule. MSU is coming off back-to-back 10-2 campaigns which included NJAC Championships as well as second-round trip to the NCAA Division III Playoffs.
