Hoboken, NJ (9/1/11) - Freshman forward Melanie Greco (Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater-Raritan) scored
with 7:02 remaining in the second overtime period to give Montclair
State a 2-1 victory over Stevens in the season opener for both teams at
the DeBaun Athletic Complex on Thursday.
Senior midfielder Christina DeMartinis (Kinnelon, NJ / Kinnelon) tied the game with 7:39 to play in regulation.
The Red Hawks held the advantage in shots and corner kicks, but
it was the host Ducks who got on the board first. After a scoreless
first half, Stevens collected the first goal of the game when Kathleen
Schuckers picked up a failed clear by Montclair and fed Ann Heine for
the goal just 2:31 into the second half.
Montclair State would keep chipping away looking for the
equalizer until they got it from DeMartinis at the 87:21 mark. Off a
free kick, DeMartinis fired a shot from 19 yards out that deflected off
the wall of defenders into the back of the net tying the game at 1-1.
That’s the way game stayed through the final minutes of
regulation and through most of the first overtime period when the Red
Hawks came within inches of winning the game. Sophomore Allison Wacker (Stockholm, NJ / Wallkill Valley) blasted a shot with 2:25 left that clipped the crossbar. It was the only shot in the period.
On to the second extra period the game went. Wacker got a second
chance 62 seconds in, but her shot was stopped by Ducks keeper Kaitlin
McClymont. Two minutes later, it was Stevens’ turn as Bridgette Barden
got a solid shot off in close on the right side only to be snared by
freshman goalkeeper Gina Policastro (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick).
Policastro then punted the ball down the field where freshman Kaila Fasano (Westwood, NJ / Westwood) gained
possession. Fasano moved a few yards before threading a pass through a
defender to Greco, who went 1-on-1 against McClymont. Greco pushed to
within eight yards before flicking a shot between the legs of McClymont
and into the goal for the game winner.
Policastro made six saves in her collegiate debut while McClymont had 10 saves.
The Red Hawks outshot the Ducks, 22-14 and had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
Montclair State open up their home slate on Saturday, September 3
as they host College of Mount St. Vincent on the new turf field at MSU
Soccer Park. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 pm.
