Women's Soccer Now 3-0 as Red Hawks Blank John Jay, 8-0

Montclair, NJ (9/6/11) – Freshman forward Francesca Gibson (Cape May, NJ / Lower Cape may Regional) andMelanie Greco (Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater-Raritan) each scored a pair of goals as Montclair State improved to 3-0 with an 8-0 victory over John Jay College at a rainy MSU Soccer Park on Tuesday afternoon.

Sophomores Stephanie Barbulescu (Franklin, NJ / Pope John XXIII) and Amanda Pero (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) each had a goal and assist as the Red Hawks held their second straight opponent without a shot. Montclair, which is off to a 3-0 start for the first time in program history, outshot the Bloodhounds 29-0. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Marcelina Kopec (Staten Island, NY / Franklin D. Roosevelt) had 10 saves for John Jay, which fell to 1-2 on the season.

Gibson, who scored four goals in MSU’s previous game versus College of Mt. St. Vincent, netted her fifth of the season at the 5:32 mark. Greco scored unassisted just under 15 minutes later and Gibson’s second of the game at 21:28 made the score 3-0.

Kaila Fasano (Westwood, NJ / Westwood) recorded her second goal of the season off an assist from Melissa Koster(Yardville, NJ / Steinert) at 33 minutes before Rachel Senyszyn (Succasunna, NJ / Roxbury) scored her first and set up Greco’s second to close out the half as Montclair State led 6-0 at the break.

Barbulescu, who missed all of last season with an injury, registered her first goal since October 2009 as she scored off an assist from Pero at 53:30. Pero accounted for the final Montclair State score 43 seconds later. 

Goalkeepers Gina Policastro (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick) and Jessica Belmont (Hamilton, NJ / Steinert)combined on the shutout for the Red Hawks.

The Red Hawks now head to the Pacific Northwest for two games this weekend. Montclair will face Pacific at Pacific Lutheran University on Friday, September 9 at 8:00 pm EDT. The following day, Montclair takes on Pacific Lutheran at 4:00 pm EDT.
