Volleyball Falls at New Paltz

New Paltz, NY (9/7/11) - The Montclair State volleyball team dropped its second straight match on Wednesday evening as SUNY New Paltz extended its home winning streak to 33 with a 3-0 victory over the Red Hawks at the Hawk Center. New Paltz, which has not dropped a home match since 2006, won by scores of 25-6, 25-17 and 25-15). as MSU fell to 3-2 on the year.

New Paltz set the tone in the first set and carried that momentum throughout the remainder of the contest. In the first stanza, the Hawks hit at a .458 clip, notching 11 kills in 24 total attempts with no attack errors. In addition, they boasted a sideout percentage of 85 percent. They went on to hit .200 and .375 in the second and third sets to finish the evening at .330.

Freshman outside hitter Bridget Haggerty (Troy, N.Y./Troy) drew her first collegiate start and helped pace the attack, recording a match-high seven kills and compiling a .467 hitting percentage. Senior outside hitter Melinda DiGiovanna (West Hempstead, N.Y./West Hempstead) hit .545 in just two sets of action with six kills on the night. Defensively, sophomore libero Carrie Hack (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) posted a match-high 17 digs, while junior middle hitter Laura Stanhewicz (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) fueled the front row with three block assists. The setters also performed well in the 6-2 offense, with sophomore setter Marissa King (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) dishing out a match-high 17 assists and sophomore setter Brigid Moore (Victor, N.Y./Victor) handing out 15.

For Montclair State, Marta Topor (Bogota, NJ / Bogota) and Megan Cockcroft (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) each floored a team-high four kills, while Angela Campo (Washington Township, NJ / Westwood) distributed 14 assists.Kaitlyn Irwin (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) registered 10 digs, while Topor corralled two block assists.

The Red Hawks are back in action this weekend as they head back up the New York State Thruway to Poughkeepsie, NY for the Vassar Invitational. MSU will face host Vassar and Stevens on Friday, September 9 at 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm, respectively. Montclair closes its Invitational appearace versus MIT and Wesleyan (CT) on Saturday, September 10 at 12:00 pm and 2:00 pm.
