Poughkeepsie, NY (9/10/11) – The Montclair
State volleyball team lost its final two matches in the Vassar
Invitational on Saturday afternoon as the Red Hawks dropped a pair of
3-0 decisions to MIT and Wesleyan University.
The Red Hawks (3-6) lost to MIT in straight sets as MSU fell
25-14, 25-23, 25-15. Montclair closed out its tournament appearance with
a 3-0 loss to Wesleyan 25-23, 25-18, 25-22. Sophomore Sara Girgus
(Green Brook, NJ / Watchung Hills) was named to the All-Tournament
Team, her second All-Tournament selection in as many weeks.
Freshman Alyssa Willis (Parsippany, NJ / Parsippany Hills) led the way for MSU against MIT with five kills. Megan Cockcroft (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) and Lauren Sharp (Mendham, NJ / West Morris-Mendham) had four kills apiece. Girgus collected two kills and a team-best 11 digs.
Willis would lead Montclair State with eight kills in the loss to Wesleyan. Alyssa Batiste (Manahawkin, NJ / Southern Regional) had six kills and 10 digs while Marta Topor (Bogota, NJ / Bogota) recorded five kills and five digs. Girgus added five kills and seven digs with Kaitlyn Irwin (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) registering a team-high 14 digs.
Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, September 13 when
it plays its home and New Jersey Athletic Conference opener at the
Panzer Athletic Center against Kean University at 7:00 pm.
