“I’ve had the same great job since September of my freshman year,” beams Melita Spence ’12. Melita, a self-described “people person,” has worked as a Red Hawk Caller at Montclair State since 2008 and really enjoys her work.
She calls alumni, parents, and friends in an effort to raise vital funds in support of Montclair State’s programs. “I tell them about the new buildings and programs and anything else new on campus, and also find out what’s new with them.”
Melita and her more than 50 fellow student Red Hawk Callers help to raise more than 4,500 pledges, totaling over $250,000 for Montclair State every year. The Annual Fund supports scholarships for bright and talented students, new program development, and renovation of classrooms, laboratories, and other campus facilities.
Melita’s favorite aspect of the job is learning about Montclair State’s past from alumni. “I get to talk to alumni from all different graduation years and learn about the school,” she shares.
Melita, who grew up in Franklin Park, is a fashion studies major with a minor in business. A tireless multitasker, she has been interning since her freshman year at companies including Disney, Cutie Pie Baby, SunPass, and at New Jersey Fashion Week. She is the vice president of the Change Collegia Network and also is involved in the Fashion Club, MSU Leadership Education and Development (LEAD), and the Caribbean student organization.
When talking with alumni,“I suggest that they do a campus tour to see how much has changed,” adds Melita. “Most people are very interested in the changes and improvements to the school.”
“I often help people with concerns, especially parents of freshmen,” she shares. “Sometimes they ask how to contact their student’s advisor. They like talking to a student, and they seem reassured after talking with me. Also, if alumni are job hunting, I connect them to Career Services.”
After graduation Melita hopes to get a job in New York City doing fashion event coordinating and styling. And, she adds: “I will definitely donate to the University when I get that call!”
