Women's Soccer Cruises Past Rutgers-Newark, 6-1

Newark, NJ (9/28/11) – Freshman forward Francesca Gibson (Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May Regional HS) and senior midfielder Christina DeMartinis (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) tallied two goals  apiece as Montclair State powered its way to a 6-1 New Jersey Athletic Conference win over Rutgers-Newark on Alumni Field.

Gibson wrapped her seventh and eighth goals of the season around what eventually proved to be the game winner by sophomore forward Stephanie Barbulescu (Franklin, NJ/Pope John XXII) who scored off of a cross from freshman forward Melanie Greco (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) in the 11th minute. 

The Red Hawks (5-4-0, NJAC 2-2-0) held a 4-0 lead at the half.  The Scarlet Raiders (3-8-0, NJAC 0-3-0) were out-shot, 22-9, with MSU controlling corner kicks, 5-1.

Junior midfielder Margeaux Hedley (Westfield, NJ/Union Catholic) headed in a long aerial pass from deep on the right side by senior forward Liana Abreu (Newark, NJ/Science Park) in the 75th minute for the Raiders’ only tally.

DeMartinis scored goals just 18 seconds apart in the 89th minute.

Freshman goalkeeper Gina Policastro (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) had the Red Hawks’ only save while getting the win by playing the first half. Rachel Senyszyn (Succasunna, NJ / Roxbury) added a goal and assist for MSU.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, October 1 when they host Rutgers-Camden at MSU Soccer Park in the second half of a men's and women's doubleheader at 3:00 pm.
