Women's Soccer Blanks Rutgers-Camden for Second Straight Win, 2-0

Montclair, NJ (10/1/11) – Sophomores Stephanie Barbulescu (Franklin, NJ / Pope John XXIII) and Allison Wacker (Stockholm, NJ / Wallkill Valley) each scored in the second half as Montclair State won its second straight contest, blanking Rutgers-Camden 2-0 at MSU Soccer Park on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman goalkeeper Gina Policastro (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick) posted her second shutout as the Red Hawks moved to 6-4 on the year, 3-2 in the NJAC with the win.

Sophomore goalkeeper Leighanna Milby (Blackwood, NJ / Highland Regional) made 11 saves for the Scarlet Raptors who fell to 0-8-1 on the year, 0-4 in the league with the loss.

Montclair State outshot Rutgers-Camden in the first half, 12-0, but couldn’t muster a shot past Milby, who made six saves in the opening period. The Red Hawks also found a bit of misfortune as Francesca Gibson’s (Cape May, NJ / Lower Cape May Regional) shot banged off the crossbar in the 15th minute.

In the second half, Rutgers-Camden would record its first shot and nearly took a 1-0 lead as Bec Garretson (Atco, NJ / Hammonton) fired on goal only to be stopped by the post. Milby kept Montclair State off the board with four more saves until the 68th minute when the Red Hawks finally put one in the back of the net.

Junior Kelly Palmer (Long Valley, NJ / West Morris Central) lofted a crossing pass from 30 yards on the right side to Barbulescu, who deposited the ball past Milby for her third of the season and a 1-0 Montclair State lead with 22:06 remaining.

Wacker added the insurance goal, her first with 3:40 to play, as she fired a looping shot from 30 yards out.

MSU finished the game outshooting Rutgers-Camden, 23-2 while also holding a 14-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, October 4 as they travel to City College of New York at 4:00 pm. Rutgers-Camden is off until next Saturday, October 8 when they face Catholic University at home (12:30 pm).
