MSU Teaching Circles

Research Academy creates new communities for collegial discussions on teaching and learning at Montclair State University

http://www.facebook.com/montclairstateresearchacademy

The Research Academy will facilitate Monclair State faculty discussion groups to create forums for educators to share their teaching stories, ideas, practices, and any teaching or research issue that they would like to get peer feedback on. We are delighted to invite any and all persons who want to converse on teaching and learning topics to join us! We have selected two dates this fall to bring us all together for coffee and conversation:

Friday, October 21, 2011 - Sprague Library 031 at 2:30pm

Friday, November 11, 2011 - Sprague Library 031 at 2:30pm

We are open to any suggested topics relevant to all educators, and here are some ideas that have sprung from recent forum conversations (MSU discussion forums and POD/HETL forums):

1) What is critical thinking? How do we encourage critical thinking in our disciplines? We'd love to have faculty share what works (or what doesn't!) with others who are experimenting with different teaching tactics.

2) How do we confront negative or non-productive student behaviors? Cell phones, texting, digital devices, student incivility or distractions; how can we integrate these to teach and engage students, or work around them so they don't interfere with learning?

3) Student writing: differences between disciplines, helping students improve and connect personally with their writing, various levels of literacy that are developed through academic writing, and what struggles students have with writing that we as educators can help them overcome. Anecdotes and tips welcome!

4) Teaching stories - good, bad, funny, rewarding, what NOT to do and more! It's wonderful to connect through shared teaching experiences, and often we don't know that what we are experiencing is the same or better than what our colleagues are also experiencing. Bring your stories (NOTE: this is not a gripe session!!!) and listen to others as we reflect on teaching and learning and the common elements we each experience in the classroom.

We will have coffee and snacks available! We are also open to scheduling more dates. If you can't make these dates but are interested in becoming involved or in suggesting topics (or stories we can share with the group), please contact Julie Dalley at dalleyj@montclair.edu.

We hope to see you there!
