Glassboro, NJ (10/8/11) – Midfielder Michelle Hagel (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) scored
two goals to lead Montclair State University to a 3-0 victory over
1Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on
Saturday afternoon.
The Red Hawks, ranked ninth in this week’s Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III Coaches Poll, improve to 13-0 overall and 3-0 in the conference with their first win over Rowan since 2006. The 13th ranked Profs have an 8-5 record with a 2-1 conference mark.
Hagel put Montclair State ahead, 1-0 at 2:18 in the first period. Forward/midfielder Brooke Hullings (so. Delran, NJ/Delran) had a quick pass in front of the cage and Hagel hit a one-timer that got by the goalie. At 30:53, forward Jennifer Tafro (so. Little Falls, NJ/Passaic Valley) scored on a penalty stroke to make the score, 2-0 at halftime.
Hagel’s second goal came with 5:47 remaining on a penalty corner. Forward Devin McNamara (sr. Mt. Royal, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) sent
a pass to Hullings who tapped the ball to Hagel near the top of the
circle. Hagel blasted a shot to the lower left corner of the cage.
Montclair State took 12 shots and Rowan had 11. Red Hawks’ goalie Megan Bosland (jr. Boonton, NJ/Boonton) made one save for her fifth shutout of the season. Profs’ goalie Jen Goldberg (jr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) stopped three shots in 65:13. Goalie Lisa Apt (sr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) turned away two shots in the final 4:47.
The Red Hawks return to action on Wednesday, October 12 when they
travel to Selinsgrove, PA to face Susquehanna University at 7:00 pm.
