Dan Avento, Michelle Hagel Chosen MSU Athletes of the Week for October 10

Montclair, NJ (10/10/11) - Sophomore linebacker Dan Avento (Hillsdale, NJ / Pascack Hills) and field hockey junior forward Michelle Hagel (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex) have been selected as the MSU Athletes of the Week for October 10.

Hagel tallied five points as the No. 9 Red Hawks remained unbeaten with a pair of wins last week. Hagel had an assist as MSU defeated Stevens 3-2 in overtime. She then scored a pair of goals as Montclair beat No. 13 Rowan 3-0, their first win over the Profs since 2006. Hagel currently leads the team in assists with 10 and is second in goals and points (8 and 10, respectively). She leads the NJAC in assists and is ranked fifth in points scored and seventh in goals.

Avento made big plays for the Red Hawks defense as seventh-ranked Montclair State remained unbeaten with a thrilling 34-33 win over 15th-ranked Cortland. He led the team in tackles with 15 and ended two Cortland drives. The first came in the third quarter as he intercepted a pass at the MSU 5 and returned it nine yards leading to an eventual Red Hawk score that made it 31-14. After Montclair State retook the lead late on a field goal, he batted down the final pass of the game to preserve the victory. Avento currently leads the team in tackles this season with 40 and ranks in the fourth in the NJAC.
