“I have such a warm spot in my heart for Montclair State that it is only right that I give back to my alma mater. Also, as a recipient of the now-defunct State Scholarships, I feel an obligation to support the school that gave me an opportunity to further my education. I owe it all to the dedicated professors and instructors who guided and shaped me into the professional that I am today.”

“Montclair State University is the foundation of my entire career. I retired in December 2009, and there was only one thing that came to mind: ‘Thank you Dad, for sending me to college so I could have this wonderful career that I’m proud of.’ Montclair State meant so much to me that I encouraged my son to attend as well. He received his BA in 2007 and his MA in 2009.”

“Through being involved with different campus organizations, including the Student Government Association, I finally found the direction I was looking for in my life at Montclair State. I was guided and helped by many of the campus life administrators here at MSU. Because of the amazing opportunities I had, I owe it to future students to give so that they can have the same life-changing experiences I did.”

There are many different reasons why alumni choose to support Montclair State. To find out more about them, the Annual Fund recently conducted a ‘giving survey.’ We are grateful for the 381 people who took the time to respond. Your opinion counts! Your feedback will help us serve you better in the future.
Respondents ranged from the class of 1943 to the class of 2011. Interestingly, the class of 1976 had the most responses, with the class of 2010 coming in a close second. The most respondents, 23.4%, were from the College of Education and Human Services, with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in second place with 22.8%.
When asked their reasons for supporting the University, 72 percent said they gave because of their ‘pride in having attended Montclair State.’ The number two response (37%) was that ‘MSU prepared them for the real world,’ and number three (36%) was that they ‘strongly believe in the mission of MSU.’
Of the respondents who are not currently donors, many said that they couldn’t afford to give right now. Others feel disconnected from the University or are supporting other worthy causes. Regarding their personal connection to the University, 36.8% of respondents feel moderately connected to Montclair State, and 20.6% feel strongly connected. Many mentioned the convenience of being able to make or pay pledges online.
When asked about how to enhance their Montclair State connection, some respondents suggested more alumni events, as well as more out-of-state events for non-local alumni and more alumni events for alums of various ages. We are working to expand alumni programming, including regional networks and more career-related programs. In the meantime you can stay connected through our online community. Also check out the offerings at the Center for Career Services. We are here for you!
We welcome your feedback and will work on implementing your suggestions and preferences in future planning and programming, solicitations, and alumni outreach. For more information about the giving survey, contact Barbara Krusko, Director of Annual Giving, at 973-655-7492 or email@example.com.
