Montclair State University's Gay & Lesbian Staff & Faculty Association and SGA’s Spectrums is sponsoring the Garden State Equality statewide Town Meeting for Marriage Equality in NJ, Thursday, September 15, at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Ballrooms. The focus of this Town Hall is the support of clergy for the civil marriage rights of gay and lesbian couples in New Jersey. The event is free and open to the public.
The meeting will include:
-- A conversation with Rev. James VanderWeele, pastor of Community Church Unitarian Universalist in New Orleans, from Baton Rouge. Rev. VanderWeele's church, all but destroyed, was three blocks away from New Orleans' 17th Street Levee breach. Note: Donations of canned or other non-perishable food, clothes and toys will be collected for survivors of hurricane Katrina
-- The Rev. Dr. Norman Kansfield, fired as president of the New Brunswick Theological Seminary for performing the same-sex wedding of his daughter Ann to her partner.
-- The largest gathering ever of New Jersey Clergy for marriage equality.
-- There will also be a moment in tribute to Marilyn Maneely. who recently passed away from ALS, led by her fellow plaintiff in New Jersey's lawsuit for marriage equality, the Rev. Mark Lewis.
