Second-Half Surge Carries Men's Soccer Past Kean, 4-1

Montclair, NJ (10/12/11) – Montclair State scored three times in a span of 3:53 to snap a second-half tie as the Red Hawks pulled away from Kean University for a 4-1 victory at MSU Soccer Park on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior forward Kevin Zalewski (Parsippany, NJ / Parisppany) and Mike Rudden (Kearny, NJ / Kearny) each had a goal and assist for the Red Hawks, who won for the seventh time in their last eight outings improving to 10-2-2 on the season.

Freshman Alexander Fernandez (Woodbridge, NJ / Woodbridge) had a goal for the Cougars (8-4-2), who had their two-game winning streak snapped with the loss.

Kean outshot Montclair State 8-5 in the first half, yet it was the Red Hawks getting the lone goal in the opening 45 minutes as Zalewski netted his sixth of the year off an assist from Rudden at 31:01 of the half.

The Red Hawks maintained that lead until the 53rd minute when Fernandez registered his third goal of the year finishing off a feed from Tulio Pinto (Curitiba, Brazil / Agostinho Pereira).

Montclair would regain the lead eight minutes later with the start of their three-goal run. Off a throw in, Brian Cullen (Clementon, NJ / Highland Regional) was able to bang home a shot past keeper Brian Haines (Ridgefield Park, NJ / Ridgefield Park) for the go-ahead goal. It was Cullen’s fourth of the year.

Three minutes later, Dan Mendoza (Hackensack, NJ / Hackensack) lofted a free head into the box where Rudden was able to flick a header into the net for his first of the season and a 3-1 MSU lead at 63:26. Just 34 seconds after that goal, Zalewski fed Sean Pauls (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) for the latter’s fifth of the year as Montclair State extended its margin to 4-1.

Montclair State keeper Anthony Rogic (Boonton, NJ / Morris Catholic) made four saves for MSU, which outshot the Cougars 15-12. Haines made five saves before giving way to Nick Pavlichko (Byram, NJ / Lenape Valley), who made one save in 19 minutes. Jesus Amaro (Union City, NJ / Union City) posted a scoreless 10:35 of the game.

Kean recorded all four corner kicks in the contest.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, October 15 with road games. Montclair State in at New Jersey City University for a 12:00 pm start against the Gothic Knights. Kean is down in Ewing, NJ to face The College of New Jersey at 1:00 pm.
