Field Hockey Bounces Back; Red Hawks Roll Past Drew, 5-1

– Sophomore forward Brittany Carroll (Kingston, NY / Rondout Valley) scored twice and assisted on a third goal as eighth-ranked Montclair State rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 5-1 victory over Drew University at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.

Michelle Hagel (Fairfield, NJ / West Essex), Kate Norgard (Columbia, NJ / North Warren) and Jennifer Tafro (Little Falls, NJ / Passaic Valley) each had a goal as the Red Hawks bounced back from its 1-0 loss to The College of New Jersey to improve to 15-1 on the year.

Freshman forward Angela Terracciano (Keansburg, NJ / Raritan) scored a goal for the Rangers, who dropped their second straight falling to 9-7.

Hagel gave Montclair State a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the contest collecting her ninth goal of the season. Carroll slipped a pass from the right side across the front of the goal to Hagel, who banged in the feed.

Montclair held that lead until the final minute when it scored twice. Norgard notched her 10th of the year on an unassisted tally. The Red Hawks then got a penalty corner as time expired. Off the corner, Kelly Churchill (Newton, NJ / Newton) flipped the pass in front to Carroll who fired shot while falling down inside the right post as MSU led 3-0 at the break.

Carroll would collect her second of the game and 14th of the season at the 47:17 mark pushing the lead to 4-0. Tafro accounted for the final MSU goal scoring on a penalty stroke with 15:16 to play. It was Tafro’s seventh goal.

Terracciano would help the Rangers avert the shutout as she banged in a rebound with 6:22 remaining for her 10th goal of the year.

Montclair State goalkeeper Megan Bosland (Boonton, NJ / Boonton) made one save before giving way to Laura Cummings (Ocean Township, NJ / Ocean) who made two. Churchill had a defensive save for the Red Hawks, who outshot Drew 19-8.

Sophomore Christiana Carlini (Amherst, NH/Bishop Guertin) had eight saves for the Rangers.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, October 22. Montclair State heads to Pomona, NJ to face Richard Stockton at 1:00 pm. Drew is home to Juniata College for a Landmark Conference contest at 1:00 pm.
