Gibson's Goal in Final Seconds Lifts Women's Soccer Past Vassar, 2-1

Box Score

Montclair, NJ (10/22/11) – The Montclair State women’s soccer team showed on Saturday that it doesn’t matter when you score during the game, you just have to find the back of the net. The Red Hawks scored in the closing seconds of each half as Montclair slipped past Vassar College, 2-1 at MSU Soccer Park.

Jessica Kiniery (Branchburg, NJ / Somerville) and Francesca Gibson (Cape May, NJ / Lower Cape May Regional) both scored as Montclair (12-4-1) won its fourth straight while extending its unbeaten streak to nine games.

The late goals spoiled an outstanding effort for freshman goalkeeper Lily Lanier (Brookline, MA / Brookline), who made 17 saves, including 11 in the second half as the Brewers fell to 6-8-1. Kesley Domb (Round Rock, TX / Round Rock) had the goal for Vassar.

For the second straight season, Montclair State used late scoring to upset the Brewers. Last year the Red Hawks scored twice in the final 10 minutes to post a identical 2-1 victory in Poughkeepsie.

This time around, Montclair State would take the lead although it would not come until late in the opening period. Despite outshooting Vassar 9-1 in the first 45 minutes, MSU would not get on the board until 15 seconds before halftime. Sophomore Amanda Pero (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) crossed a ball into the box a bit before Kiniery banged in the loose ball for her first goal of the year as Montclair led 1-0 at the break.

In the second half, MSU kept up the pressure however Lanier kept making saves giving Vassar a chance and the Brewers would take advantage as Domb scored off an assist by Elizabeth Hullar (San Francisco, CA/ Branson) at 67:34 tying the game.

Lanier would go on to make four more saves to keep the game tied. Meanwhile, Montclair held the Brewers without a shot over the final 22:26 but still found itself in the tied contest until 27 seconds to play when Gibson scored her team-leading 12th goal of the season giving the Red Hawks the lead and ultimately the victory.

Freshman Gina Policastro (East Brunswick, NJ / East Brunswick) stopped one shot for MSU, which outshot Vassar 23-5 while taking all five corner kicks in the game.

Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, October 26 as they host Ramapo College at MSU Soccer park beginning at 3:00 pm. It will be the final regular-season contest for Montclair as they then head to the NJAC Tournament which begins on Saturday, October 29.
