Box Score
Montclair, NJ (10/26/11) – Junior forward Kate Norgard (Columbia, NJ / North Warren) knocked
in a shot from the right side with 19:23 remaining for the lone goal
as sixth-ranked Montclair State tied the school record for wins in a
season with a 1-0 victory over local and NJAC rival William Paterson at
Sprague Field on Wednesday.
Junior goalkeeper Megan Bosland (Boonton, NJ / Boonton)
made a pair of late saves in recording her sixth shutout of the season
as the Red Hawks improved to 17-1 overall and finished 5-1 in the
NJAC. Montclair will be the No. 2 seed when the inaugural conference
tournament begins on Wednesday, November 2. MSU will host Rowan
University at 7:00 pm.
Senior goalkeeper Meghan Trivett (Highlands, NJ / Middletown
North) made nine saves for William Paterson, which fell to 4-14 overall
while finishing 1-5 in the NJAC. It was the ninth one-goal loss for
the Pioneers in 2011.
Montclair State, which tied the school record of wins set by
its 2005 and 2006 squads, outshot the Pioneers 16-2 in the game yet the
Red Hawks could not find the back of the cage as Trivett made five
stops in the first half. Meanwhile, MSU clamped down on the Pioneers
holding William Paterson without a shot through the first 35 minutes.
The scoreless action continued into the second half although
Montclair State would get several chances on five penalty corners in the
first 14 minutes of the half. Trivett came up with two saves during
that time but the sixth corner for the Red Hawks provided the only
score of the game.
Off the insert from Devin McNamara (Mount Royal, NJ / Gloucester Catholic), the ball made its way around to Emily Burd (Newton, NJ / Newton)
who was positioned on the right side toward the top of the circle.
Burd slid a pass to Norgard who then flipped the ball over Trivett for
her 11th goal of the season.
After being shutdown without a shot the Pioneers came up with
two huge opportunities late in the game. The first came with just under
nine minutes remaining as Ally Hartman (Pemberton, NJ / Pemberton)
fired a shot from the right side that Bosland caught a piece of for the
save. The ricochet still headed toward the goal where Jacqui Giammetta
(Wayne, NJ / Wayne Hills) tried to deflect the ball in however her
attempt bounced off her stick and away from cage.
In the final seconds, the Pioneers got the second of their two
penalty corners and nearly capitalized on the chance. Lauren Boegly
(West Deptford, NJ / West Deptford) flipped a shot that Bosland
stopped. Again the rebound trickled toward the goal line and only a
sliding sweep by Brooke Hullings (Delran, NJ / Delran) prevented the ball from going in with 42 seconds left.
Both teams close out their regular seasons on Saturday, October
29. Montclair State hosts Wilkes University at Sprague Field beginning
at 7:00 pm. William Paterson is in Reading, PA to take on Alvernia
University at 1:00 pm.
