Farmingdale, NY (11/19/11) – Sophomore forward Ordel Goldson (Hackettstown, NJ / Warren Hills) scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds off the bench, however Montclair State had too much of a hole to climb out of in the second half as the Red Hawks fell to John Jay, 89-79 in the championship game of the Courtyard by Marriott Tip-Off Tournament at Farmingdale State on Saturday.
Senior forward Andrew August (Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater- Raritan) had 20 points and 11 rebounds while freshman guard James D'Angelo (Long Valley, NJ / West Morris Central) had 11 points, four rebounds and five assists as the Red Hawks fell to 1-1 on the season. August and D'Angelo were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
MSU fell behind by 10 points in the first eight minutes of the game, but manage to cut the deficit down to three times, the last coming with 6:26 left as Goldson converted a three-point play to make the score 31-26. However, the Bloodhounds would score the next eight points to boost the lead back to double digits and led 50-36 at the half.
In the second half, John Jay took its largest lead of the game at 66-45 with 13:53 left. Montclair State would make a run getting the lead down to 83-77 with 54 seconds left as D'Angelo connected twice from the foul line. But that would be as close as the Red Hawks would get as went 6-for-6 down the stretch to preserve the victory.
Freshman guard Aaron Williams (West Orange, NJ / Jonathan Dayton) had 16 points for Montclair State.
The Red Hawks are back in action on Tuesday, November 22 as they face Berkeley College in their home opener at the Panzer Athletic Center beginning at 6:00 pm.
