Christensen, Tobie Named MSU Athletes of the Week for November 21

Montclair, NJ (11/21/11) - Senior men's soccer midfielder Jon Christensen (Medford Lakes, NJ / Shawnee) and women's basketball freshman Melissa Tobie (Elizabeth, NJ / Roselle Catholic) have been named MSU Athletes of the Week for November 21.

Christensen had a hand in all three goals this past weekend helping Montclair State to its first NCAA Division III Final Four appearance as the Red Hawks won the Sectional Tournament at Amherst College. On Saturday, Christensen scored both goals as MSU edged Neumann University, 2-1 in the Sectional Semifinal. He gave the Red Hawks 1-0 lead 1:10 into the match and, after the Knights tied the game, scored the game-winner off a corner kick with 9:30 left. It was his third and fourth goals of the season. The next day he set up Kevin Brown’s game-winning goal with 16:12 remaining as the Red Hawks knocked off Stevens, 1-0 to advance to the national championship tournament in San Antonio, TX where MSU will face Ohio Wesleyan on December 2.

Tobie helped the Red Hawks off to a 2-1 start as she averaged 21.3 points and 8.3 rebounds while shooting just over 57 percent from the field in the three contests. Named the NJAC Rookie of the Week, Tobie scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds in her debut as Montclair knocked off Scranton 57-55, their first win over the Lady Royals since 1990. She then had 25 points and eight boards in a 73-66 win over Regis in the Eastern Connecticut Tip-Off Tournament opening round. Tobie closed out her week with 23 points and eight boards in a 75-68 loss to the host Warriors in the title game. She was named to the All-Tournament Team. Tobie currently ranks third in the NJAC in scoring, sixth in rebounding and seventh in field goal percentage.
