Montclair, NJ (11/22/11) – Senior guard Amanda Horvers scored 13 of her game-high 21 points in the second half as Mount St. Mary College defeated Montclair State University, 66-57, in a non-conference contest Tuesday night at the Panzer Athletic Center.
Mount St. Mary, which improved its record to 3-1 on the season, trailed after the first half, but came back to take control of the game in the second half.
Horvers (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), who hit on five 3-pointers in the contest, buried three from behind the arc in key spots for the Blue Knights in the second half. Trailing 36-35 with 14:41 remaining, Horvers hit on back-to-back 3-pointers during an 8-2 run that gave Mount St. Mary a five-point advantage at 43-38.
Montclair State, which dropped to 2-2 on the year, came back to narrow the gap to just one point at 43-42 with 8:48 to play following two free throws by freshman guard Janitza Aquino (Kearny, N.J./Kearny). But that would be as close as MSU would get. Aquino, playing in a reserve role, topped the Red Hawks with 15 points, including 13 in the second half
Mount St. Mary managed to keep its lead by outscoring Montclair State 19-11 over the next seven minutes and build a nine-point margin at 62-53 with 1:32 left. Senior guard Jen Mocanu (Belford, N.J./Middletown North), who scored all 12 of her points in the second half, led the Blue Knights with eight points in the run. Junior forward Kate Hartnett (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) also reached double digits with 13 points for Mount St. Mary
Junior forward Colleen Kelly (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) scored 10 points and shared team-high rebounding honors with six for Montclair State.
Montclair State resumes play Nov. 30 when it travels to Rutgers-Newark in a New Jersey Athletic Conference matchup. Mount St. Mary will host New York University on Nov. 29.
