New London, CT (12/2/11) – Senior Andrew August (Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater-Raritan) registered a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds while freshmanKen Rubenstein (South Orange, NJ / Columbia) added 20 points as Montclair State won its second straight slipping past Coast Guard, 71-67 in the Camel/Cadet Classic on Friday evening.
Freshman guard Brian Flores (Union, NJ / Union Catholic) added 16 points as the Red Hawks (4-2) face Connecticut College in the championship game on Saturday, December 3 at 4:00 pm.
August and Flores each had 11 points in the opening half as Montclair State led 36-25 at the break.
In the second half, eight straight points by Rubenstein, including a pair of back-to-back three pointers made the score 44-25 with 17:23 remaining. Two free throws by August gave Montclair its largest lead at 48-27 before Coast Guard trimmed that margin to 52-41 just before the midway point of the half.
Rubenstein collected five consecutive points to boost the lead back to 57-43 with 8:53 left, however Coast Guard battled its way back pulling within 68-65 with 58 seconds. Coast Guard then missed a jumper and freshman Dwight Bostic (Roselle, NJ / Abraham Clark) came away with the rebound. Bostic would hit two free throws with 10 seconds left to all but seal the win for MSU.
August had seven assists while Bostic finished with five points and three rebounds off the bench.
