Holiday Toy Drive for Local Kids Brings Together Staff at Montclair State University

The staff members of Student Development and Campus Life (SDCL) at Montclair State University came together this holiday season to spread good cheer to the children of Essex and Passaic Counties. Responding to an outreach by New Jersey State Assembly Speaker Sheila Y. Oliver and Assemblyman Thomas P. Giblin to support a Holiday Toy and Book Drive, SDCL members contributed nearly 175 gifts to the drive.

Organized by Julie Fleming, assistant director for Student Involvement at Montclair State, SDCL included the toy drive at their annual holiday potluck luncheon.

“Everyone brought at least one gift, some two,” said Fleming. “It was such a success that we plan to make it an ongoing tradition.”

Karen L. Pennington, vice president of Student Development and Campus Life, along with Fleming, delivered a van-load of games, stuffed animals, toy trucks, balls, activity kits, and more to Assemblyman Giblin’s office in Clifton on Friday, December 15.

"The division of Student Development and Campus Life staff was delighted to help the children in our local community enjoy their holiday,” said Pennington. "We are proud that we could be a part of this community event."

Toys and books collected will be distributed to the East Orange/Orange Community Development Corp., Montclair Child Development Corp/Head Start Program, The Boys and Girls Club of Clifton, and United Way of North Essex.
