Jersey City, NJ (1/11/12) - Junior guard Michael Morris (Burlington, NJ/Burlington City) came off the bench to ignite a 17-1 second half run that opened up a double figure lead and the Gothic Knights hit 10 three-pointers in a 70-62 New Jersey Athletic Conference victory over red-hot Montclair State University on Wednesday night at the John J. NJCU keeps on rolling, improving to 12-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference while defeating Montclair (13-4, 3-2 NJAC) for the third time in four meetings over the past two years. In the 154th meeting between the schools, Montclair, which leads the all-time series 87-67 since 1932-33, had its six-game winning streak snapped. MSU had won 11 of its last 12 games before the loss.
Morris, whose previous best was 10 points, scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half and finished the game shooting 5-of-6 from the field and 3-for-4 from three-point distance in 20 minutes of action.
NJCU shot 58.3 percent in the second half (14-24) and 75 percent from three-point range, knocking down 6-of-8 triples in the period. Overall, the Gothic Knights buried half of their shots for the game (26-52, .500) and shot 55.6 percent beyond the arc, connecting on 10-of-18.
Junior swingman Kaihrique Irick (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) led NJCU in scoring and rebounding with 17 points (7-15 FG), eight rebounds and three assists while draining 3-of-4 three-point chances.
Junior swingman Walik Albright (Jersey City, NJ/Create Charter) added 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting (2-3 3FG), forced five steals and added three assists.
Andrew August (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan), a First-Team All-NJAC pick last year, scored a game-high 22 points (6-14 FG) while playing every second of the 40 minutes for Montclair. He used his power to force fouls, and shot 10-of-11 from the line, including his first nine in a row. He added six rebounds and four assists.
NJCU also received a thorough effort from senior point guard Keith Williams (Jersey City, NJ/Create Charter), who tallied 14 points (5-13 FG, 2-4 3FG) with six rebounds and five assists. Senior center Matt Washington (Hackensack, NJ/Paterson Catholic) added five boards and four points while defending August to start the night.
