Men's Basketball Receives Great Performances in 79-74 Win Over Rowan

Montclair, NJ (1/21/12) - Senior forward Andrew August (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) led three 20-point performers as Montclair State University posted a 79-74 victory over Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon at the Panzer Athletic Center.

August, who scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, got help from junior forward Ordel Goldson (Hackettstown, N.J./Warren Hills), who had 21 points and a game-high 17 rebounds and sophomore guard Daniel Singleton (Neptune, N.J./Neptune), who added 20 points in a reserve role as Montclair State improved its record to 16-4 on the season and 5-2 in the NJAC with its eight win in its last nine games.

Rowan, which dropped its third consecutive game in falling to 8-10 overall and 2-5 in the conference, took the lead at the start and jumped out to an early 13-4 advantage. The Profs, behind sophomore guard Rich McNamara, who scored 11 of his team high 21 points in the first half, held a 20-11 lead with 12:25 remaining in the period.

But Montclair State rallied back to take the lead, outscoring Rowan 23-9 to go up 34-29 with 1:47 to play before heading into the intermission, ahead 36-33. Keying the comeback was junior guard Ken Rubenstein (South Orange, N.J./Columbia) and Singleton. Rubenstein scored eight of his 11 points, and Singleton added seven points in the run.

Rowan closed the deficit to one point at 36-35 at the start of the second period, but never regained the lead the rest of the way. The Profs did make another serious run at the Red Hawks late in the game. Trailing 69-58 with 4:51 to play, Rowan scored seven straight points to make the score 69-65 with 3:41 left.

But Goldson took control for MSU down the stretch, scoring eight of the team’s final 10 points to seal the victory. Goldson had 16 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in the second half. August had 15 points and nine boards in the half.

Sophomore guard Phil Jackson (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) scored 20 points for Rowan with Sophomore guards Jason Rosenberg (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) and Dee Benson (Somerdale, N.J./Sterling) also reached double digits for the Profs with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Both teams resume play on Wednesday when Montclair State hosts Ramapo College while Rowan University travels to Rutgers University-Camden in NJAC contests.
