Radnor, PA (1/23/12) – Freshman forward Melissa Tobie (Elizabeth, NJ / Roselle Catholic)
scored a season-high 27 points along with seven rebounds as Montclair
State won its fifth straight knocking off Cabrini College, 66-47 on
Monday evening.
Sophomore guard Theresa Towns (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) had
13 points as the Red Hawks closed out their non-conference schedule
improving to 13-6 this season. It is the second five-game win streak
for MSU this year.
The Red Hawks raced out to a double-digit lead in the first five
minutes of the game as Tobie scored six points in a game-opening 11-1
run as Montclair led by 10 with 14:55 to play before half.
Cabrini would counter with a run of its own and eventually cut
the deficit to 19-16 with 6:08 to go on a three-pointer. However,
Montclair answered with 10 of the game’s nest 11 points to take a 29-17
advantage with 1:58 to play before halftime. Tobie, who had 14 points
in the first half, scored six in the spurt as the Red Hawks ended the
half on a 12-3 run taking a 31-19 lead into the break.
In the second half, MSU would maintain its double-digit lead.
Towns would score 11 of her points over the final 20 minutes.
Junior guard Michelle Montagna (New Providence, NJ / New Providence) finished with nine points, all on three-point field goals, with Colleen Kelly (Rockaway, NJ / Morris Hills) pulling down a team-best eight rebounds. Taylor Jeffers (Franklin Township, NJ / Franklin) chipped in with seven points and four rebounds with Jenny Malone (North Plainfield, NJ / Roselle Catholic) collecting six points.
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, January 25 as
they host Ramapo College at the Panzer Athletic Center beginning at 6:00
pm.
