"Let’s Talk” Walk-in Sites Give Students Easy Access to Counseling Support

Are you having trouble with classes or is a problem getting you down? Perhaps your roommate is too noisy or you feel homesick. Students can find help at five “Let’s Talk” Walk-in Consultation and Support Hour sites on campus, where they can talk to a counselor about anything that’s bothering them.

Based on a model developed by Cornell University, the “Let’s Talk” sites are informal places where no appointment is necessary and no commitment to ongoing therapy is required. The aim is to increase access to support for students who might be reluctant to seek more structured services, such as those offered at Montclair State’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), because of concerns about stigma or because they’re too pressed for time.

The Let’s Talk sites are staffed by psychologists and social workers from CAPS. Services are free and confidential, and students are seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Typically, students meet with a counselor for 15-30 minutes. Although not every problem can be resolved so quickly, many can. Subjects run the gamut, from relationships and feeling blue to eating issues and sleep problems.

“We can help students with techniques for managing stress, strategies for improving sleep, and coping skills,” says Sudha Wadhwani, staff psychologist/coordinator of outreach and community intervention at CAPS. “We also work with students to determine ways they can approach a particular situation, whether it’s communicating with a professor or a peer.”

Being able to vent and bounce concerns off an objective professional “can help a person feel more empowered and able to handle a situation,” she adds. “If students have longer term issues they want to work on, we can help them connect to further treatment, whether on or off campus.”

The sites are strategically located at key spots around campus, with hours of operation staggered to cater to student demand. Starting with two sites in spring 2010, the network at Montclair State has expanded to the five sites (below) as word has spread and their popularity has increased.
