Montclair, NJ (2/4/12) – The Montclair State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams closed out their dual meet schedule on a positive note as the Red Hawks swept local and conference rival William Paterson at the Panzer Athletic Center Pool on Saturday. The men recorded a 157.5-128.5 victory against the Pioneers while the women triumphed 158-121.
Sophomores Joseph Berry (Edison, NJ / Edison) and Kelsie Donahue (Egg Harbor, NJ / Egg Harbor) and junior Ashley Vallone (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge)
each won three individual events as Montclair took first place in 22
events, including 1-2 finishes 12 times. The men finished the year at
5-8 overall, 1-3 in the NJAC while the women finished 5-6 overall, 2-2
in the conference.
Berry won both long-distance freestyle events as he claimed top
honors in the 1000 and 500 with times of 10:23.33 and 4:59.20,
respectively. He completed his day with a win in the 200 freestyle as he
out-swam teammate Michael Volski (Edison, NJ / Edison) with a time of 1:48.87 to Volski’s 1:52.56.
Donahue took first place in both backstroke events winning the
100 in 1:04.78 and taking the 200 with a time of 2:19.97. She then led a
1-2 finish by MSU in the 500 freestyle going 5:38.29 with Jacky Moe (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) coming in second at 5:49.24.
Vallone was a winner in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.34), 50
freestyle (25.66) and 100 freestyle (57.09). She led a 1-2-3 finish by
MSU in the 100 freestyle as Jessica Joseph (Brick, NJ / Brick Township) and Kathleen French (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) came
in at 59.57 and 1:00.90, respectively. Joseph finished second to
Vallone in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.93) and was second to Maria Vira (Bayonne, NJ /Bayonne) in the 200 breaststroke as Vira swam 2:39.43 with Joseph registering a time of 2:43.60.
Kelly Abner (Glenwood, NJ /Vernon) won the 200 freestyle (2:06.12) and the 200 butterfly (2:24.03) with Jackie Ubhaus (Jefferson Township, NJ / Jefferson) coming in second in both events. Moe took first place in the 1000 freestyle (11:54.44).
Zak Westerberg (Hamilton, NJ / Hamilton North)
won pair of events sweeping the butterfly stroke. Westerberg swam
2:07.75 in the 200 and then posted a time of 55.37 in the 100 event.
Senior Chris Lee (Morris Plains, NJ / Parsippany Hills) also won twice as he bested Donny Keenan (Scotch Plains, NJ / St. Joseph’s)
in the breaststroke events each time by less than a second. Lee won
the 100 with a time of 1:02.31 out-touching Keenan, who came in 1:02.83.
In the 200, Lee again was victorious with a time of 2:21.47 with
Keenan clocking in at 2:21.63.
Volski won the 200 individual medley as he out-touched Lee for
the victory. Volski went 2:05.59 besting Lee by 19-hundredths of a
second. Thomas Long (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) was a winner in the 50 freestyle (22.86) and 100 freestyle (50.79). The 200 medley relay team of Westerberg, Lee, Sean French (Cranford, NJ / Cranford) and Long were also victorious with a time of 1:41.76.
Divers Lauren Corrente (Nyack, NY / Nyack) and Tommy Dreisbach (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) each
put together solid performances. Corrente posted scores of 127.75 and
196.95 in the one and three-meter events, respectively. Dreisbach
scored 104.95 points in the one-meter event and 151.40 in the
three-meter.
Montclair State is now off until Friday, February 17 when they
compete in the three-day 2012 Metropolitan Conference Championships at
Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ.
