Women's Indoor Track and Field Finishes Third at CTC Championships

Middletown, CT (2/11/12) – The Montclair State women’s indoor track and field team, ranked 7th in the latest USTFCCCA Atlantic Regional Rankings, got two first-place finishes and a total of nine Top 5 showings as the Red Hawks finished third at the CTC Indoor Track and Field Championships at Wesleyan University on Saturday.

MSU totaled 70 points in finishing third in the field of 17 teams. Junior Heather Gearity (Rutherford, NJ/ Rutherford) won the pentathlon and the 4x200 relay team also claimed first place.

Gearity provided plenty of drama in the pentathlon as she won the five-event competition with a score of 3,117 points. Gearity finished second in both the 60 hurdles (9.55 seconds) and high jump (1.52 meters) before taking fourth in the shot put (8.11 meters) and third in the long jump (4.65 meters). She entered the final event – 800 meters – in third place and needed a victory in the event to win the meet. She would come through with a personal-best time of 2:21.50 finishing first and in the process 803 points which put her atop the final standings.

The 4x200 relay that took top honors in the event with a time of 1:47.71.

Junior Ashadaya Patterson (Trenton, NJ / Northern Burlington) placed fourth in the 200 meters (26.81) and Imani Jones (Roselle, NJ / Abraham Clark) in fifth (26.84).

Jones would place eighth in the 60 meters (8.14 in the prelims / 8.25 in the finals) and was also the second leg of the 4x400 relay squad that finished fourth. Stephanie Fego (Verona, NJ / Verona), Jones, Dominique Williams (Lumberton, NJ / Rancocas Valley) and Patterson clocked in at 4:11.00. Powell was ninth in the 200 meters (27.24) and 12th in the 60 meters (8.24) with Patterson taking fourth in the 60 hurdles (personal-best 9.32 in prelims / 9.33 in the finals).

Shenaya Murphy (Somerdale, NJ / Collingswood) and Fego went seventh and eighth in the 400 meters as Murphy came in at 1:02.56 with Fego right behind at 1:03.36. Angelina Ollo (Parsippany, NJ / Parsippany) was eighth in the 800 meters (2:31.58). Nicole Presti (Saddle Brook, NJ / Saddle Brook) was 10th and 11th in the 1000 meters (3:24.77) and mile (5:49.68), respectively. Presti's time in the 1000 meters was a personal best.

In the field events, Shannon Kermah (Woodland Hills, CA / Burroughs) was fifth in the long jump at 4.90 meters (16-feet, 1-inch) while Murphy posted a best leap of 4.30 meters (14-feet, 1 ¼ -inches). Sara Douma (West Milford, NJ / West Milford) placed finished fifth in the triple jump (10.30 meters / 33-feet, 9 ½-inches), a quarter-inch in front of Kermah (10.29 meters). Antonietta Altilio (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) was eighth in the event at 10.05 meters (32-feet, 11 ¾-inches).

Tanaya Jones (Newark, NJ / Weequahic)
threw 9.51 meters to place in the Top 20 in the shot put.

Montclair State will have one more tune-up meet before the NJAC Championships on February 24. The Red Hawks will be in Princeton, NJ on Saturday, February 18 for the Princeton Invitational.
