Red Hawks Set Three More School Records on Day Two of Metropolitan Swimming and Diving Championships

New Brunswick, NJ (2/18/12) – Three more school records were set as the Montclair State men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams  completed their second day at the 2012 Metropolitan Conference Championships on Saturday at Rutgers University.

Junior Zak Westerberg (Hamilton, NJ / Hamilton North) set his second individual mark and third overall in two days as he broke Billy Blomn’s 1996 record in the 100 butterfly. Westerberg, who placed 18th overall went 53.41 in the morning prelims but cut over a second off in the evening posting a time of 52.22 to break’s Blomn’s standard of 52.42 set at the 1996 NCAA Division III Championships.

On Friday, Westerberg registered an NCAA qualifying mark in addition to setting a new MSU record in the 50 freestyle.

Sophomore Donny Keenan (Scotch Plains, NJ / St. Joseph’s ) became the first MSU male swimmer to register a sub-one minute time in the 100 breaststroke as he eclipsed Drew DeCagna’s record set during the 2005 Metropolitan Championships. Keenan, who finished eighth overall, broke the mark in the prelims with a time of 59.35 and the lowered it later that night with a time of 59.28 in the finals.

Senior Kelly Abner (Glenwood, NJ / Vernon) recorded the third new Montclair State record as she finished seventh in the 400 individual medley. Abner shattered the previous record held by Galina Loutchouk, who swam 4:50.06 two years ago at the Mets. Abner beat the mark by six seconds with a time of 4:43.96. She placed seventh in the evening finals.

Sophomore Kelsie Donahue (Egg Harbor, NJ / Egg Harbor Township) narrowly missed out on a fourth record in the 100 backstroke as she finished 14th. Donahue, who later helped the 800 freestyle relay to fifth place, swam 1:01.72 missing Colleen Griffin’s 202 mark by ..48 seconds.

Donahue anchored the 800 freestyle relay to a time of 8:10.05 as she was joined by Ashley Vallone (Park Ridge, NJ / Park Ridge), Jacky Moe (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford) and Abner in the event.

Vallone finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.86 while Moy swam 2:03.12 in the 200 freestyle to finish 18th. The 200 medley relay team of Lauren Uckar (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan), Maria Vira (Bayonne, NJ / Bayonne), Victoria Bischoff (Cape May, NJ / Wildwood Catholic) and Jessica Joseph (Brick, NJ / Brick Township)was 12th in the event with a time of 1:58.75.

Joseph Berry (Edison, NJ / Edison) placed 10th overall I nthe 200 freestyle with a time of 1:46.66 while Michael Volski (Edison, NJ / Edison) was 13th in the 400 IM (4:26.51). Volski then combined with Sean French (Cranford, NJ / Cranford), Chris Lee (Morris Plains, NJ / Parsippany Hills) and Keenan to placed 12th in the 200 medley relay (1:38.66).
