Tancer Wins Shot Put as Men's Indoor Track and Field Places Fifth at NJAC Championships

New York, NY – Senior Jon Tancer (Montville, NJ, Montville) won the shot put to help the Montclair State men’s indoor track and field team to a fifth place finish at the 2012 New Jersey Athletic Conference Championships at the New Balance Track and Field Center on Friday afternoon.

Montclair State total 48.5 points as they finished behind The College of New Jersey which captured its 15th straight team title. Ramapo College was second followed by Rowan and newcomer Farmingdale State.

Tancer, who finished third last year, won the event by almost a full meter as she recorded a best throw of 15.45 meters. Nick DiGiacomo (Morris Plains, NJ / Parsippany Hills) was 10th in the event at 12.24 meters. Tancer would also place eighth in the weight throw at 12.01 meters with Ruaidhri Walsh (Bloomfield, NJ, Hudson Catholic) coming in 10th at 10.75 meters.

Junior Niyi Adenugba (North Brunswick, NJ, North Brunswick) was second in the 60 hurdles as he clocked in at 8.48 seconds. He would also finish sixth in the long jump (6.42 meters), one spot behind Emmet Mather (Lake Como, NJ, Manasquan) (6.43 meters).

Ian Poinsett (Salem, NJ, Salem) placed sixth in the 400 meters with a time of 50.98 seconds and then helped the 4x400 and 4x200 relays to finishes of fourth and fifth respectively. Poinsett ran the leadoff leg of the 4x400 relay as he along with Eric Gershey (Boonton, NJ, Parsippany Hills), Jeremy Parchment (South Orange, NJ, Seton Hall Prep) and Jonathan Feigin (Sewell, NJ, Washington Township) posted a time of 3:31.72. Poinsett and Gershey them teamed with Ahmier Dupree (Lakewood, NJ, Lakewood) and Koran McDaniel (Neptune, NJ, Neptune) for a time of 1:33.19 in the 4x200 relay.

The Red Hawks’ 4x800 relay squad of Nicholas Kral (Randolph, NJ, Randolph), Mark DiGennaro (Wharton, NJ, Morris Hills), Rafael Irula (Rockaway, NJ, Morris Hills) and Rodney Copeland (Toms River, NJ, Manchester Regional) was fourth with a time of 8:16.29.

Andrew Florez (Hoboken, NJ, Eastern Christian) and Troy Cathey (East Rutherford, NJ, Becton Regional) were ninth (3.80 meters) and 10th (3.50 meters) in the pole vault, respectively.

The Red Hawks scheduled to head back to the New Balance Center tomorrow (February 25) for the Armory Collegiate Challenge.
