Hoboken, NJ - Sophomore Kelly Schoneveld (Denville, NJ, Morris Knolls) and junior Kailee Beal (Succasunna, NJ, Roxbury) each scored three goals however a second-half rally by Montclair State fell short as the Red Hawks dropped their first game of the season falling at Stevens, 10-8 at DeBaun Field on Saturday.

Senior Cora Delfini (New Egypt, NJ, New Egypt) had two goals as the Red Hawks fell to 1-1 on the season.

Montclair State fell behind 3-0 as the Ducks’ Joey Galligan scored once and Spencer Waybright twice giving Stevens the three goal lead with 12:43 left in the opening period. Schoneveld would get the Red Hawks on the board just over a minute later but Stevens put two more in the back of the net to take a 5-1 advantage with 4:56 to go.

Beal’s first tally off a feed from freshman Tierney Conlon (Caldwell, NJ, Caldwell) cut the deficit to 5-2 but Galligan scored again and Michelle Buonacuore each netted goals in the final 1:42 as Stevens led 7-2 at the break.

Delfini opened the scoring in the second half for MSU however goals by Buonacuore and Jenna Scheibling 24 seconds apart gave Stevens it largest lead at 9-3 with 14:12 left.

Montclair State then made its rally starting with Delfini’s second with 13:12 to play. Schoneveld collected back-to-back goals, the first on a free-position attempt and the second and unassisted tally with 9:24 to play as the Red Hawks pulled within 9-7.

Beal’s goal 32 seconds later brought Montclair within two goals at 9-7, but Amanda Ingersoll scored with 5:58 to go to boost Stevens’ margin to 10-7. Beal countered less than minute later with her third goal however that would be as close as MSU would get as Ducks’ goalkeeper Meg Collins stopped two shots down the stretch.

Collins finished with 10 saves for Stevens (1-0), which outshot Montclair State by a slim 28-26 margin. Junior Tiffani Hednerson (Landing, NJ, Roxbury) made nine saves for the Red Hawks.

Schoneveld also added four draws and two ground balls while Brittany Cardone (New Egypt, NJ, New Egypt) posted a team-best four ground balls in the contest.

Montclair State returns to action on Thursday, March 6 when it travels to Scranton, PA for a 4:00 pm matchup with the University of Scranton.
