The theme of our spring issue, Connecting to Tomorrow, is more than a catchphrase—it is the title of the new Montclair State University strategic plan. The culmination of a two-year, campus-wide effort, the strategic plan outlines key challenges and actions for ensuring the University’s future success.
An essential component of Connecting to Tomorrow is the creation of programs that will prepare our students to succeed in a rapidly changing workplace and to be engaged citizens in a rapidly changing world. Newly developed programs in Business and a growing number of combined bachelor’s and master’s degrees have been designed to give motivated students a valuable edge. The new School of Communication and Media, which will admit its first students this fall, provides exciting educational opportunities across a wide range of disciplines and creates a truly cross-platform media and communication curriculum.
As we continue to work toward a vibrant future, we also celebrate two retiring deans who have made outstanding contributions to the University: Dean Ada Beth Cutler of the College of Education and Human Services, and Dean Geoffrey Newman of the College of the Arts. You can read their reflections on years of service in the following pages, as well as learn more about the initiatives mentioned above.
As we move toward realizing the promise of tomorrow for Montclair State and our 18,500 students, I invite you to join me in writing the next chapter of this great institution’s history. Alumni can participate in a wide range of new programs offered by our Office of Alumni Relations. We also encourage friends and alumni to make a gift through our website (montclair.edu/giving) as a way of expressing their commitment to the mission of our institution and the students we serve.
These are exciting times at Montclair State. I look forward to your being a key part of our bright future.
