More than 50 alumni of the Montclair State University Communication Studies Department gathered in the L. Howard Fox Theater on Thursday, May 10 for the first Annual Communication Studies Alumni Gathering. The evening began with greetings from Communication Studies faculty members, Dr. Wayne Bond, Professor Emeritus and Dr. Harry Haines, Department Chair. Dr. Haines introduced fellow faculty members in attendance, including Dr. Philip Bakelaar, Dr. Hugh Curnutt, Dr. Todd Kelshaw, Dr. Yi Luo, Dr. Christine Lemesianou, Steve McCarthy, Dr. Chris McKinley, Dr. Joel Penney, and Larry Weiner.
Those in attendance enjoyed a special private show featuring mentalist Manlow and magician Baltus, followed by a post-performance reception. Graduates enjoyed having the opportunity to catch up with fellow alumni and friends, see some of their favorite professors and meet new faculty members, and witness how the department, College of the Arts, and university have grown. Alumni ranging from class years of 1968-2011 as well as several current students had the opportunity to network with classmates and reunite with faculty members they may not have seen since graduation.
Given the recent announcement that Montclair State University’s Board of Trustees has approved the creation of a new School of Communication and Media, this is a very exciting time for the department. In September 2012, the Communication Studies Department will join with the Broadcasting and Filmmaking Departments to comprise Montclair State University’s new School of Communication and Media. To celebrate the launch of the new school and welcome incoming Dean, Dan Gurskis, a fall gathering is planned. We are hoping to make this an annual tradition! Stay tuned for more information and we hope to see you then!
