Seth Xeflide

Montclair State doctoral candidate Seth Xeflide, of Clifton, recently took second place within the graduate student division of the paper competition at the Middle States Geography Meeting in Reading, Pennsylvania. He competed against 13 other M.A., M.S., and Ph.D. candidates from across New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, including students from the doctoral programs at Penn State, Rutgers, Hunter College, Temple and SUNY-Buffalo.

Xeflide’s paper, “Analysis of Base Flow Trends in New Jersey,” was praised for the clarity with which it explained a very complex topic pointing to the breadth of knowledge he has of the subject.

"Seth has all it takes to become a prominent scientist,” says Duke Ophori, chair of the Department of Earth and Environmental Studies. “He is intelligent, hardworking, persistent and self-motivated. He is quiet, but knows exactly what he wants. This price is a mark of his high potential in scientific research.”

Xeflide, who came to Montclair State in 2005 is working towards a Ph.D. in Environmental Management and expects to graduate in 2009. He is a graduate assistant for the Department of Earth and Environmental Studies and is a member of the American Geophysical Union, the Geological Association of America and the American Society of Civil Engineers. He is a graduate of the University of Ghana (B.Sc.) and the University of Kiel, Germany (M.Sc.).
