Montclair, NJ (12/4/10) – Junior guard Jaime Ericson (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) scored 17 points and added six rebounds, two assists and four steals as Montclair State climbed back to the break-even mark with a 54-43 victory over Rutgers-Camden in a New Jersey Athletic Conference contest at the Panzer Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore forward Colleen Kelly (Rockaway, NJ / Morris Hills) had eight points, four rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots as the Red Hawks evened their record both overall and in the NJAC at 3-3 and 1-1, respectively.
Junior guard Brittany Turner (Belleville, NJ / Queen of Peace) scored a game-high 20 points to go along with four rebounds as the Scarlet Raptors dropped their fourth straight falling to 2-4 overall, 0-2 in the league.
The Red Hawks led for much of the game but fell behind 12-10 with 9:50 to play in the first half as Cesyana Thompson-Blissett (Washington, DC / Theodore Roosevelt) buried a three-pointer. However, Ericson would answer with a three of her own on the next possession as Montclair State took back the lead. Turner countered with a free throw to tie the score at 13-3 before Montclair would go on a 9-0 run to end the half.
Ericson sank a jumper to begin the spurt and a three-pointer by Sara Kelley (Newtown, CT / Newtown) made the score 18-13 with 4:45 to play. Kelly would get the final four points on a layup and two foul shots as the Red Hawks led 22-13 at the break.
In the second half, MSU would extend the lead to as many as 16 points when freshman Michelle Montagna (New Providence, NJ / New Providence) hit a jumper with 16:41 to play making the score 31-15.
Rutgers-Camden would chip away at the lead and got back within double-digits at 45-38 on Samantha Bragg’s (Lindenwold, NJ / Lindenwold) free throw with 4:09 left. Kelly would hit twice from the line, and Ericson hit a big three pointer with 2:02 on the clock to boost the lead to 50-39.
Kisandra Ayanbeku (Brockton, MA / Randolph) had five points and nine rebounds while Theresa Towns (Morristown, NJ / Morristown) added six points and four assists. Kelley contributed five points for Montclair State.
Bragg had nine points, four rebounds and three assists for the Scarlet Raptors, who struggled from the line in the game making just 9-of-22 attempts from the charity stripe.
Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, December 8 as they host Baruch College at the Panzer Athletic Center beginning at 6:00 pm. Rutgers-Camden takes on King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, PA a day earlier (December 7) at the same time.
