In fall 2003, 8,226 students applied for admission to Montclair State University as first-time full-time freshmen, up from last yearís 7,426.† Fifty-one percent, or 4,219 of these applicants, were accepted into the University.† Confirmed students, or those who accepted MSUís offer of admission to the University, numbered 1,695 or 40.1 percent of those accepted.† About 38.4 percent, or 1,618 of those accepted, enrolled in classes.† An additional 109 first-time part-time freshmen applied; 38 were accepted; 32 confirmed and 29 part-time freshmen enrolled.
Accepted students have slightly higher average Combined SAT (CSAT) scores and average class rank than enrolled first-time full-time freshmen.† CSAT scores are 1,075 for accepted first-time full-time freshmen, regardless of admission type, and 1,039 for those who enrolled.† The class ranks are 72 and 70, respectively.†
Fifty-eight percent of enrolled first-time, full-time freshmen are female.† The racial/ethnic profile of these students is: 11.5 percent are African American; 6.8 percent Asian; 17.1 percent Hispanic; 0.4 percent Native American; 62.1 percent White; and 2.0 percent are international students.†
Sixty-three percent of all first-time, full-time enrolled freshmen come from five counties: Essex, 16.0 percent; Bergen, 16.3 percent; 14.1 percent from Passaic County; 8.7 percent are from Hudson County; and another 7.4 percent are from Morris County.† About 3.9 percent are from out-of-state.
In fall 2003, 3,011 first-time, full- and part-time transfer students applied to MSU.† Sixty-one percent of those applying were accepted.† Of the 1,848 who were accepted, 75.8 percent, or 1,401 confirmed their acceptance; and 67.6 percent, or 1, 250 of those accepted subsequently enrolled.††
About 56.2 percent transferred from New Jersey public community colleges.† Sixty percent of the New Jersey community college students came from three community colleges in particular: Bergen Community College, County College of Morris and Essex County College.
All told, a total of 3,116 new students started MSU in fall 2003, 6.1 percent more than last fallís number of 2,936.† First-time full-time freshmen made up 51.9 percent of all new students, followed by full-time transfer students, 36.0 percent; readmits, 6.7 percent; part-time transfer students, 4.1 percent; part-time freshmen, 0.9 percent; and all second BA students, 0.3 percent.
