Applications for the MA in Educational Leadership are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis with two (2) starts per year, fall and spring.
- GRE waived for applicants with undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- In addition, applicants may waive the GRE test requirement if they have an earned master’s degree or higher from an accredited United States college or university. Applicants must complete the Standardized Test Waiver Form.
In order to gain admission into the program students must submit:
- An application
- $60 application fee (non-refundable)
- Official copies of the academic transcript from each college and/or university attended, documenting an earned undergraduate degree
- A statement of objectives
- Two (2) letters of recommendation from persons qualified to evaluate the applicant's promise of academic achievement and potential for professional growth
- Copy of Teaching Certificate (not required if applying as Degree Only)
While not a requirement for entry into the MA program, applicants who possess a Standard New Jersey Teaching or Educational Services Certificate or an out-of-state Standard Teaching Certificate or Educational Services Certificate and a minimum of 3 years teaching or Educational Service experience may apply for the NJ principal and supervisor certification upon completion of the degree. The principal endorsement is required for any position that involves service as an administrative officer of a school or other comparable unit within a school or district. Such positions shall include assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, principal, assistant principal, vice-principal and director. In addition, the supervisor endorsement is required for both supervisors of instruction and athletic directors.
- Official transcripts are required from each school you have attended.
- An official transcript bears the raised seal of an academic institution and is sent directly to The Graduate School by the institution. You may also include your official transcript in a sealed envelope with the institution’s registrar’s signature or seal with your application.
- If you studied under a maiden name or prior name, your institution must indicate both prior and current names on your transcript.
- Do not request a transcript from the Montclair State University Registrar if Montclair is listed on your application as a previous or current institution. The Graduate School will obtain your Montclair State University transcript directly.
- Including your U.S. Social Security number on your transcript or transmittal sheet will expedite processing of your application.
Many of our programs require a written statement or an essay. The statement or essay, in which you present your reasons for your proposed graduate studies, is an important component of the admission decision process, and applications will not be reviewed without it.
Write an essay of no more than three double-spaced pages in response to the prompt below. Your essay can include some description, but it should also demonstrate that you have critically reflected on the profession and your potential place within it. Please write in a concise, formal, professional style. If you make generalizations or assertions, be sure to provide support for them.
In one integrated essay, thoughtfully discuss each of the areas identified below:
- Why you are interested in the profession in which you want to pursue graduate work and, if applicable, the particular concentration within that profession.
- Your knowledge of issues and trends in this profession or field.
- What areas and topics you hope to study in depth and why.
- Any related professional or personal experiences you have had, including opportunities to collaborate with other professionals, and how these experiences make you particularly well-suited for the profession.
- Potential challenges and opportunities associated with diversity you think are relevant to the profession you are pursuing. Be sure to explain what you mean by "diversity" (related, for example, to race, gender, age, sexual orientation, language, dis/ability) and how it may pose challenges or present opportunities.
- All applicants, other than Non-Degree applicants, are required to submit letters of recommendation to The Graduate School. Recommendations from professors in your undergraduate major field of study who are familiar with your academic work are ideal.
- If you have been out of school for a considerable time period, you should submit letters from employers, supervisors, or other professionals who can comment on your background, experiences, and motivation to succeed. Friends, family members, or fellow students are not appropriate sources for letters of recommendation, and many graduate programs will not review your application if it includes letters from these sources.
