About Hillel "The first aim of Hillel is to be the same thing to every Jewish student, "a welcoming gateway" to the organized Jewish community. The second aim is to be different things to every Jewish student. To accomplish this, Hillel actively encourages individual students and the community as a whole to listen to the ideas of others and to incorporate meaningful innovations into programs, events, and services. Hillel is committed to a pluralistic vision of Judaism, one that takes in all movements. Thus, the organization embraces all Jewihsh students on campus, regardless of background or specific Jewish affiliation." (United Jewish Community Center of New Jersey Metrowest Website.) At Montclair, Hillel consists of a group of students who want to have a link to their Jewish heritage. The group has made great strides on campus in promoting Jewish Awareness and education to the community. One goal of the organization has been to make other people aware of who we are and our traditions. The students strive to stay connected to one another and many consider Hillel a home away from home. Many students have been able to find a group of students with whom close friendships can be formed and a safety net established. Hillel works everyday to make Jewish life on campus better for students and faculty. Non-Jews who choose to become involved in Hillel are able to learn about our heritage and are often fasinated by the strong bond that is forged among members. Members of Hillel find true friendships that they can rely on and that is one of the main goals that the organization is trying to achieve. |
