THE MathLab OPTION
SELF-PACED
ALTERNATIVES TO
BASIC SKILLS
MATH I — COMPUTATION
(MATH 050)
and
MATH II — ELEMENTARY ALGEBRA
(MATH 051)

If your Montclair State University Placement Test (MSUPT) showed that you needed Basic Skills Math I — Computation remediation (your Math Computation (MC) score is less than 13) or that you needed Basic Skills Math II — Algebra remediation (your Elementary Algebra (EA) score is less than 10), then

For those of you whose MC score was close to passing (MC score at least 10 and less than 13), there are two options to the regular classroom course MATH 050, Basic Skills Math I — Computation:

I.  The first option is to Challenge Test your MC score.  You may schedule a Challenge Test by filling out and returning the attached stub.  Before taking this test, you should study basic arithmetic topics on your own (for example, study the Computation review packet that you received with your testing notification).  NOTE:  you are allowed to Challenge Test your MC score only once!

II.  If you were not successful in your Challenge Test, you should register for MATH 060, the MathLab.  The MathLab instruction takes place in a self-paced, small group tutorial mode, in room RI-255.  Your tutoring hours are arranged to accommodate the rest of your schedule.  The MathLab has both day and evening hours available.  After registering for MATH 060, call the MathLab office, (973)655-4391, or come to the office, RI-242, to schedule your hours.
Similarly, for those of  you whose EA score was close to passing (EA score at least 7 and less than 10), there are two options to the regular classroom course MATH 051, Basic Skills Math II — Algebra:

I.  The first option is to Challenge Test your EA score.  You may schedule a Challenge Test by filling out and returning the attached stub.  Before taking the test, you should study basic algebra topics on your own (for example, study the Algebra review packet that you received with your testing notification).  NOTE:  you are allowed to Challenge Test your EA score only once!

II.  If you were not successful in your Challenge Test, you should register for MATH 061, the MathLab.  The MathLab instruction takes place in a self-paced, small group tutorial mode, in room RI-255.  Your tutoring hours are arranged to accommodate the rest of your schedule.  The MathLab has both day and evening hours available.  After registering for MATH 061, call the MathLab office, (973)655-4391, or come to the office, RI-242, to schedule your hours.

HOW IT WORKS . . . . .

During the first meeting with your tutor, you are given a diagnostic test which identifies your individual areas of weakness.  Periodically, as you progress, you will be given practice tests.  When the MathLab Coordinator feels you are ready, you will be

given a chance to re-test the appropriate portion of the NJCBSPT.  If you apply yourself, you may complete your remediation prior to the end of the semester, which would give you time to start work on your algebra or intermediate algebra, if your program so requires.

All tutoring in the MathLab is done by Math/Computer Science graduate assistants or by the MathLab Coordinator.

MATH 060 and MATH 061, like MATH 050 and MATH 051, are 3-credit courses whose credits do not count towards graduation.  MATH 060 and MATH 061 are graded as pass/fail courses.
